Re: battery charging
It depends if your charger is likely to sent voltage spikes through the system, I have an Optimate (getting quite old now actually) that I have no problem sticking straight on the battery but I don't think I'd trust the cheapy I got from Lidl on there.

Re: battery charging
I follow this procedure viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13431
before disconnecting the quick-release clamp on the battery positive terminal, then connect your charger to the battery.
(I always do it this way on the 807 as it's a major ball-ache removing and refitting the battery).

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

It's perfectly safe to charge the battery with it still connected to the car as long as you follow some simple rules....
Be sure there is plenty of ventilation around the battery/car.
Don't switch the charger on until all connections are good.
Switch the charger off after charging and before taking the leads off the battery terminals.
Take care there are no possible sparks anywhere near the battery whilst it is charging.
