Am I being taken for a mug
Hi all again just been told by the garage that there is 2 different types for my car as in starter motors question 1 is this true and question 2 quote for fitting and supply cheap one £172 and expensive one £209 and its a 2.2 hdi thanks paul

I replaced my starter myself, and I'm quite a novice so it shouldn't take a garage more than an hour. I have 2 starter motors knocking about somewhere, I think I paid about £30 for one.
It doesn't really matter how many teeth the starter has, and any 2.0 or 2.2 HDi starter will fit.
I suspect you have a leaky air doser, blowing boosted oily air over the back of the starter.....

I have booked it in now 150 all in no messing around and can you tell me what the air dossier is as I do think that i have an over boost problem as when you put your foot down it does like a mini dump valve voing off like tiss tiss tiss thanks cor getting back to me Paul

HI, £150 isn't a bad price from a garage.
The air-doser is the 'Y' shaped black plastic thing that attaches to the inlet manifold just under the front half of the engine cover. Its 'Y' shaped so either end of the 'Y' can be opened independently to control the air temperature that goes into the engine ( 1 inlet goes via the intercooler - cold air, the other inlet goes behind the intercooler and has the metal tube which has hot water in it - warm air )
The vacuum opened/closed valves in the dosers inlets often leak around the pivots, which under boost from the turbo spews out a bit and blows over the back of the starter motor. It is possible to purchase a bypass kit ( readily available on the 406 coupe club ) to eliminate leaks and preserve starter whilst tidying up the engine bay
Many members on here and on the coupe club have this modification - its worthwhile.
Check out my thread - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22036 - to see the work I have done on my 2.2Hdi, maybe food for thought if you want to eliminate potential problems.
