How do 406's deal with the cold?

My pug resets the date and clock if it's below -15 Celsius. But starts fine I guess... Battery: few years old, 12V/62Ah/540A

Sounds like the battery voltage is dropping very low on start up, as Lozz says I think a new battery is in order.

UK spec diesel can start to gel at -15C odd. Additives can take this to around -25C I believe, but this might be responsible for the starter having to work a lot harder than normal.

Still, I'd get the battery tested as a first step

Judging by the tacho scale, I'd say the OP's car is petrol

I agree it's most likley a failing battery

Yes, it could be too small - if you post the VIN, we should be able to check the original battery spec.

Our* 1.6HDi sounded a bit unnecessary at 0 deg C starting, it's on a new battery funded by the Bank of Wellington but did a few little coughs at first, bless it.

There are loads on the parts diagrams but I think this is the one L2 400/60

So my current battery exceeds factory recommendations?

But in any case, do you think the problem might be one of three:
1. Battery is getting old
2. Low capacity
3. Low cold cranking current

I'd think all 3, it's the most likely part of the system, followed by a bad connection somewhere.

How old is the battery?

Mine crapped out and died one frosty morning last January/February. It was fine the day before, and when I went to start it, it just went "Meh" and refused. The dash lights came on for a few seconds, and almost no response from the turn of the key.

I replaced it myself with a Yuasa silver battery of the recommended size for my car, and it instantly fixed the problem.

Maybe I should check the earthing connections on the car... A bad ground/earth can also lead to such problems?
Next year, new battery. This year maybe won't get -20C anymore. Above -15, everythings fine.
