Heater blower not working
Moderator: Moderators
Hi, my mums phase 2 1.8 had a similar problem, only it didn't start with a problem with the ignition barrel sticking. Instead the heaters just stopped working. after prodding about with my multi-meter i determined it to be the switching mechanism at the back of the ignition barrel. On the phase 2 406 there's a 3rd auxiliary power supply that is switched from the ignition which is connected to the altenator and is only live when the engines running. The only thing it seems to have loaded from it is the heater blower motor. Anyway the switch inside had broken. replaced it (on its own without the ignition barrel) and it worked fine. Got the part from the local peugeot breaker which cost like 20 quid. Hope this is of some help.
My blower crapped out on me 2 weeks ago.
I removed it and replacewd it with one from the Scrapyard. 5 minute job all in. Unlpug the unit from the power supply, undo 3 screws, remove, replace, re-screw, plug in.. hey presto.
The difficult bit was getting to the fecking replacement. The 406 I ripped it from was balancing on top of a Mondano which itself was sitting on top of a skip that was elevated from ground level. All in all, I was hanging on to the donor 406 12 foot in the air removing its blower motor with one hand. LOL

I had same problem with air con, posted on here somewhere but only suggestions were to change the aircon display. After much messing about, tested fan after removal to find that was ok, then used multimeter to trace back to wire on rear of Ignition switch, no feed. Never resolved problem as I traded it in 1 month later, funny thing was the aircon worked whilst on way to trade it in! :cheesy:

I have the same problem, it's definitely related to part of the electrics on the ignition switch as giving the switch a wobble or thumping the underside of the steering column starts the fan blowing again.
Jonathan is it possible for you to give me a step by step guide of how to swap out the ignition barrel?

Its also worth checking the blowers connectors in the passengers footwell. Thats where mine had broken.Davva2004 wrote:I have the same problem, it's definitely related to part of the electrics on the ignition switch as giving the switch a wobble or thumping the underside of the steering column starts the fan blowing again.

More Air Con problems
Looks like we need another thread just to deal with aircon problems......
Mine seems to work on a similar random basis - worked twice yesterday but not at all today (when its bloody hot!)
This is my first car with aircon (and I have only owned it for a month) so forgive my ignorance but;
is it the case that the condenser will be working along with the display/control panel but, without the fan nothing comes into the car?
All I seem to be getting is a rapid increase in humidity soon after starting the engine - its like sitting in a sauna until I open a window!
Having read loads of other posts tonight, It seems possible that I have been complicating things and considering faulty sensors but I guess that checking out the fan is an easier first option.
If anyone has any specialized knowledge on 2.1TD GLX aircon your help would be appreciated as Mr Haynes can't seem to help.
Thanks in advance, Graeme

Air con,
I think a new switch from the dealers is about £30, it solved all my heater problems so this would be first swap out to try. On the note of condenser working with the display it doesn't really work like that. A display is just that, displaying readings from various sensors. Most condensers will be dead by the time they reach 7years old anyway. They just rot due to the fact of what they are made from and the enviroment that they are in. I have seen commercial condensers flake like old parchment within the space of 2years in a high pollution enviroment. Since these things need gasing etc I sometimes thing it's a job best left to a specialist (and I'm all for doing a repair myself), otherwise you end up spending heaps of cash not getting anywhere fast, but thats just my view.

Its fixed - my Brother checked out the wiring (cause he knows what he is doing and I don't even know how to hold the multimeter thingy!) discovered that the fan was ok but the fan controller was shot.
Got a new one (complete with fan attached) for £15.00 from
DEVIZES RECLAMATION
nice and clean and off the shelf (no grovelling about in the scrapyard)
fitted in 5 minutes - nice and cold again
