hi folks newbie here with some needed advice!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

hi folks newbie here with some needed advice!

Post by snipes1 »

having owned a 406 rapier 2.0 90bhp for 6 years now and love it to bits ,i have a slight problem of my own doing which i kick myself for every time i start her up.
here goes first thought a little sluggish so sprayed airbox with dare i say it EGR cleaner
then all of a sudden revs take off on there own and loads of black smoke kicks out
ever since from a cold start needs a few turns then fires up really lumpy and loads of smoke
once warm it will start first time every time
i have checked all glow plugs and are fine
had a diagnostic check by local garage ,no faults there
the only thing i can think of is egr valve,is there a way of proving this without replacing as looks a bugger to get off.
any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated

Hi mate - welcome across to this more 'specialized' forum.. :cheesy:

I have been lurking here for some time now, and if it hadn't been for this forum I would not have been sticking with 406s for as long as I have.

Now, when you sprayed the cleaner into the airbox, did you spray it before the MAF or after it, as this may have damaged it a bit.
Once the engine is started, what colour is the smoke?

The EGR isn't hard to remove, but you ideally need a torx bit in a socket - and be prepared to learn new ways of stringing swear words together when you try to put it back on.....
You could remove the rubber pipe on the EGR and bung the end - this will disable the EGR and shouldn't cause an issue on an Hdi90 - but if the EGR is stuck in the open position then you may need to put a blanking plate on the (other easier) end instead...

To be honest, this sounds like a fuel issue, possibly a teeny tiny leak that lets in air overnight - do you have a priming bulb in the engine bay?

P.S. I'm not a mechanic, merely browsing forums and trying to keep my own 406 on the road...

hi thanks for the reply
unfortunatley lol i sprayed before the maf and after and then the revs redlined on its own initially lots of black smoke
when starting from cold there seems to be a hint of blue smoke which never happened before the spray and is very lumpy for a few mins then goes ok with no smoke at all
there is a priming bulb inline with the fuel filter,i am just concerned as to what damage i might have done using the fookin spray which i never wish id used
its a 2002 406 with 75k on clock if that helps

Did you spray it in short bursts?

All ican say with using this stuff: is its good if used correctly..
