Hi, no its not normal.
Is the smoke from the EGR itself ( the UFO shape thing ) or from the pipe that leads off from the right hand side that goes around to the inlet manifold?

hi seems to be coming from the flying saucer thing, not sure if this means the egr is at fault or something else causing it to smoke, any ideas.

Re: smoking egr valve!!
Okay, when the engine is off the EGR should be closed ( plunger inside is down ) as there is no vacuum applied. When the engine starts then vacuum is supplied to the flying saucer which 'lifts' the plunger and lets exhaust gas back into the engine through the silver pipe.
Maybe the plunger is stuck sort of half up which is causing problems, but smoke shouldn't come out as there is a brass washer to give a good seal.
Try unplugging the black rubber pipe from the flying saucer and bung the end to keep the vacuum from leaking - this is disabling the vacuum supply to the EGR and should keep the plunger down ( closed )
On an Hdi90, you can blank the EGR itself with a thick plate and you will have no further leaks, with a bonus of a cleaner engine and better emissions...

You could get one made for less money, but as a quick fix this is fine.
