got a C5 auto hdi...
just got another 406 estate manual 90hp but also picked up a c5 diesel auto estate. drove it 200 miles yesterday to iron out any problems and so far looks like a few engine mounts but everything else works properly and it did 47mpg.
anyone own one of these things as the forums on the Citroen sites seem lacking in info somewhat. i ordered a Haynes manual but nowadays those things are pretty useless, always referring you back to the manufacturer.
need to know how to drain gbox and does it have a TC drain plug anywhere as well. I know citron say use correct fluid in ATF so will order their spec online. how do you check the level of the gearbox fluid as youtube isn't showing much for these gearboxes,

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
will look at which box ihave later. just waiting on two engine mounts to arrive. i hate doing bottom mounts but done a few now so only take a few hours.
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
Mechanically they are pretty much the same as the 406 except of course for the gearbox and suspension, I have never owned an auto so cant comment except for the fact that an auto box failure will probably write the car off but if its OK now and you don't do a high mileage it could serve you well.
47 mpg is brilliant for an auto, is it a 2.0. or 2.2.? I have had a couple of C5s both manual though, I bought them as a logical follow on from the XMs I was running, I have owned hydropnumatic Citroens since the CX in the '80s, I loved them for the superb ride and brilliant diesel engines but I was rather disappointed with the ride of the C5, yes its soft but not as stable as the previous models.
The 406 doesn't ride quite as well but handles much better, in fact for the way it handles the ride is surprisingly good, they are also generally very reliable and relatively easy to work on and fantastic value for money on the secondhand market, I will stick with them for the foreseeable future.

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
after spending a day trying to work on it i really dislike it now. doing bottom engine mount and its fighting all the way. need a special tool to wind back the calipers so more money to spend. i wish i could find a nice 406 but everything I've seen for sale has been a complete shed , even stuff with a decent long mot.
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
You don't need a special tool to wind back the pistons in the calipers...you can use mole grips or a small set of water pump pliers...I never use a wind back tool!annie10 wrote:after spending a day trying to work on it i really dislike it now. doing bottom engine mount and its fighting all the way. need a special tool to wind back the calipers so more money to spend. i wish i could find a nice 406 but everything I've seen for sale has been a complete shed , even stuff with a decent long mot.
Open the rubber gaitor around the piston with a small screwdriver and squirt WD40 inside then use the mole grips or pliers on the edge of the pistons to wind them back in.
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
I have only changed one bottom mounting and it was a pig, I didn't get the mounting to go right in, near enough but not flush. You need to get the housing as hot as possible and the mounting as cold as possible, overnight in the freezer would, but you still have to be quick, the heat transfers very quickly.
Mind you the 406 engine is the same.

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
i did the top mount on the right and the lower mount today, what a pig of a job, even worse than on a 406.
HOWEVER it looks like the left mount has gone aswell now, BUT i cant find anything on the net for changing the left mount. i looks like a normal mount that the engine just sits on but cant even see it on the c5 so need to remove lots of stuff to look at it. does anyone have a walk through for the left mount, it must be the same as the 406 as so far everything else is very similar to a 406.

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
I have never known a l/h mount need replacing and very rarely the bottom one, its usually the bushes in the stabiliser bolted to the top mounting that fails. My last C5 had done over 200k and still had the original, it also had the original clutch and DMF but yours hasn't got one of those.

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
every 406 ive had (6) has needed the right bottom bush to be changed due to collapsing. what a difference it makes when its done though. the gearbox seems fine and powerful when in sport mode. no leaks around the gbox aswell so far.
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
after searching online i found a pic of the gbox and the mount is right on the end of the box, on the top. so need to remove air cleaner stuff and clear under passenger wheel arch area for a better look.
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
Yes, that's correct, its not to difficult to reach but when I got to mine I found it was OK so didn't change it, when I changed the bottom one it didn't seem to make any difference. Pleased to hear yours is going OK.

Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
the end of the gbox can move 2inches easily. just got part so will start it later. i presume undo mount bolt, raise engine careful of wires, pipes etc and knock out old bush and mount and fit new one and lower engine?
Re: got a C5 auto hdi...
I seem to have a vague recollection that the gearbox hangs on that mount or at least there is something odd about the way its configured, anyway you will find out when you get it apart, at least it will be easier to change then the bottom one. Hope it goes well. I seem to recall that the bolt goes through the centre of the mount and the gearbox hangs from it.

i found a pic online and you are correct. the gbox actually hangs from the mount
