im about to buy petrol 406 saloon, the outer design is just great, the interior is minimalistic, simple and clean. I have driven both diesels and petrols and im around cars some time (repairs are question of parts price). I have few questions because i want to do it properly. Which engine is better-more reliable XU7 JP4 or EW7 J4? This question also includes: should i buy multiplex or non multiplex car? My budget is fine and im good with the gas mileage of the petrol Pug. My goal is to buy the ultimate petrol 406. Ive read about ghosts living in multiplex wiring and EW7 engine tending to burn oil, so it seem to me the older model is better. So that brings another question: is there a problem with the parts for older model? It is some time its been on the market. The facelift model is considerably younger tho. So this is my dilema. Thank you very much for the answers in advance. Ive really read a lot in this forum but i dont speak english naturally and it costs a lot of time in my birth language eather so imagine that... Im currently driving Skoda fabia but im fed up with this VW steril driving and style, i live in Prag and ist like: octavia octavia passat octavia golf golf octavia... Cant say that they are bad cars but they are all the same. So thank you one more time with helping me getting out of this german averagenes
I had the 1.8 petrol EW7 engine - simple, solid, and utterly reliable. That car never let me down. The only thing I would say is that the 1.8 petrol is a bit sluggish; my longest drives were on twisty, hilly, single carriageway A-roads, and overtaking was made very tricky by a lack of grunt above 50 MPH - there just wasn't the power to overtake.
Mine was a very low mileage example though - 27,000 miles on the clock when I bought it (it was 9 years old by this point), but I more than doubled that mileage over the next 2 years, with no problems.

Yes the 406 is a brilliant car, I'm on my third now although all mine have been diesel as I do quite a high mileage and fuel consumption is important also the 2.0. Hdi engine is virtually bombproof but if you don't want it for an everyday car I'm sure the petrol one will be fine but I don't know much about them, I haven't owned a petrol car for about 30 years.
I briefly had the 160hp 2.2 in a 407 and that was pretty nice if thirsty compared to the diesels. Managed 46MPG on a run where my diesel does 65MPG. It felt very gutless compared to my diesel.
Have since driven the 180hp 2.0 petrol in a 307cc and that feels completely gutless compared to the petrol 407!
