engine management light

advice please for my 406 Diesel saloon 1999 Reg with approx 60,000 on clock.
The engine management light has recently started to come on intermittently, the speedo, rev counter ,fuel gauge etc all drop to zero. The indicators and hazard lights do not work but the electric windows still operate. The STOP light also comes on and stays on when the ignition is turned off.
After 2/3 minutes everything comes back on and I can drive off as normal. But I have just noticed that if I go over a pothole etc everything either goes off or comes back on. Has anyone come across this before. Is it a wiring problem or something more. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Methinks theres either bad earth or a live wire touching something it shouldn't intermittently (hence how pothole shocks affect it)

I agree with blue, probably a wiring connection problem there somewhere.

I'm thinking it may be something easy - one of the instrument cluster connectors not being connected right. I'd definitely have a check there first given how easy it is to access.

Lights coming on could be caused by providing the cluster with 12v on a ground, BUT that would almost certainly trip a fuse I reckon. Alternatively given *which* lights are showing, it could be a fault elsewhere being picked up by the ECU, in which case a fault code may be stored?

Indicators are dependant on the hazard warning switch working and not a lot else IIRC. Guess it could be worth unplugging and plugging the connector behind the switch a few times in case there's muck causing a bad connection there...

Of course if you have a D9, I don't know how much of what I've said is still valid...
