I've driven turbo diesels for 30 years or more and never come across one with a filter in the turbo feed, I think including one on the 1.6 is a disaster waiting to happen, if the oil gets sludgy, and with the ridiculous oil change intervals on modern diesels, it will, it clogs and deprives the turbo of oil with the inevitable result, if it wasn't there even the sludgy oil would continue to lubricate the turbo.

The filter is obviously there for a reason, but I can't think what it could possibly be for? Early XUD's actually had the same filter but it was removed on the first service.
I have moved away from the fuel economy oils that are specified by Ford (WSS M2C913-D), Volvo (ACEA A5/B5) and Citreon (ACEA C2) and now head to an ACEA A3/B4 30 weight with a SAPS of less than 1% (Total Quartz 9000 0w30 runs really nice in my DV6) or an ACEA C3 oil with 6 month/6,000mile intervals. Once I've ditched the DPF and EGR I'll just stick to an A3/B4 *w30 and maybe as the miles increase past 100k or so may even step up to a 0w40 or 5w40 oil like Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0w40.
I've spent far too much time looking into oil recently.
Apparently the biggest cause of failure on these are loose injectors. The injector bolts come loose so carbon builds up around the base of the injector eventually creeping into the valvetrain where it's smashed up into small chunks of carbon which can't be dissolved or dispersed in fully synthetic oil and blocks up the turbo oil filter and the oil pickup. That said I've not checked mine since the car was new and now it's on 55,000miles.
I also want to get hold of one of these sumps...

When I picked up new injector seals from a Suzuki dealer I remarked on the difference between the old and new seals. The parts guy said that they were one of the many updates to the DV6 engine including the removal of the oil filter screen on the turbo oil feed bolt

Not quite true! The oil filter screen is still there but it's further back inside the bolt so it has a bigger surface area.
I think if I get the chance to go down the Hybrid Turbo route with mine (200bhp+) I'll have flexible oil lines made up so I can ditch the screen.

That is true about the loose injectors causing carbon and infecting the oil. The Citroen's injectors don't leak but apparently the first one to start is the right hand side of the cam cover as viewed from the front. I thought about 'nipping' the securing bolts up a tad but chickened out thinking I'd snap them.

There's no harm in giving the bolts a little tickle is there? I mean if anything they should be loose if its true that they work themselves off like they do.

I don't honestly know, but I've got a feeling you're unlikely to get the same result from torquing + angle tightening a used fastener.

In this instance it may not be ideal but not because of the fasteners as they're not stretch bolts but because of the copper injector seals. I'll see what the book torque is and suggest checking the torque to that only. I just tried to have a look at mine but can't see any actuall fixings. However everything is obscured by this rubbery foamy thing which I guess is either to shield the injectors from heat or to silence them a little.
Also while I was having a poke about I noticed my battery has leaked everywhere and made one hell of a mess. Wonder how much arguing I'm going to have to do to get Ford to replace it under warranty?

Oh yeah lol I could get a smaller one....duh....mine's about 500mm long and goes from 25NM to eleventy hundred....

The problem with these injectors isn't loose injectors as such but loose pipes and the fitting that goes into the injector.
The screw that screws into the injector that the injector pipe fits onto is often loose leading to leaks.
The solution is to undo the injector pipe and tighten the screw into the injector before refitting the pipe.
When the injector itself comes loose you get a noise like a leaking exhaust manifold.
Another common fault I've come across is that the leak off pipes leak at the injector...you have to replace the whole unit as a kit for all 4 injectors.
