Inevitable, can't stop progress.
But I think we will be past caring before IC engined cars are legislated out.
My next car will be a 3.0TDi A4, maybe next year.
That'll give the greenies something to moan about.

I think the dramatic statement from Volvo really means that all of their new cars will contain an electric motor; it doesn't mean the car will be solely powered electrically although they are launching 'fully electric' models too.
Hopefully by then they'll also find a way of stopping the suspension rusting like a bastard underneath

Re: End of an era?
It doesn't surprise me, I was watching a youtube video yesterday where this chap drove his Tesla from down south somewhere to well north of Inverness in a day with four half hour stops where he charged his car while being fed and watered, that included a final charge to get him to Orkney - and no it wasn't Robert Llewellyn.
The latest Renault offering will do about 130 miles on a charge and it's relatively cheap. I don't suppose I will ever have one as by the time they are within my price range I will probably be to old to drive - but you never know.

Though 2019 seems impossibly ambitious. Publicity stunt?

Electric cars are just moving the emissions down the line, to their manufacturing, through energy used throughout their life (coal power or nuclear) to their decommissioning and disposal/recycling (there are no dangerous chemicals in a worn out internal combustion engine...)
I don't think electric cars make any sense to anyone who can't use them as disposable goods with a 5 year lifespan, any idea of using them further than that is likely to be prohibitively expensive.
Hybrid cars might have a future, if only without the, by that time, defunct & stripped out electrical motive systems, leaving them powered by what amounts to, albeit high tech, lawnmower engines.
