Alternator is making noises that suggest the bearings are shot (It's noisy when driven. I've removed the aux belt and the noise goes away. Spinning the alt. up on a belt driven off my drill and it's noisy again, you can hear the rumbling. So, I think my diagnosis is good).
So - how easy are alt.s to replace? It looks fairly straightforward from what I can see - probably the oil filter needs to come off to access one of the bolts.
Anyone done this and can offer any tips? I prefer to do mech stuff myself but if it's a ballache the garage can do it.
Other than this the old girl runs pretty well. It's a 2003 406 HDI 90 if that helps.
Easy. You'll need some long reach ratchets as some bolts are buried but not difficult otherwise. The aux belt is the only thing that needs to come off....
Thanks, I had a poke about and it looked straightforward, not even any seized bolts and I certainly didn't have to remove the oil filter - but its good to know for certain.
I've ordered a decent replacement, may rebuild the original, can't be that hard? I see a few rebuild kits on eBay.
An eBay 42€ jobby off a crashed 60k km 206 matched up on bosch part #s and went straight on, works lovely. The decrease in noise in with the car running is frankly staggering. I've never fitted a car alt. before so the curious split bushes on the rhs mounting bolts were a bit of a novelty, but other than that no surprises. Tinier hands would have helped locating the bolt on the lower lhs, mind.
With both alt.s off, side-by-side, it was obvious that the old one's bearing were terrible rumbly.
As an aside, the missus picked up a quote from the garage for doing the lot when she was passing - 500€+ all in - 300€ for a new (presumably aftermarket) alt., 100€ for a new belt (seems a bit rich even if it's a genuine peugeot part) and a couple of hours of fitting plus sundries plus tax. I spent about 60€ on parts, already had the belt, plus my time obviously. To be honest that's about as much as want to spend on a car with 175k+ miles.
