Hole in left side freeze / core plug.

Hi all, first of all sorry for long post.
Well other day water res light came on dash checked water res and looked empty filled up with mixture of anti freeze and water, started engine and steam comming from engine block, had a closer look and on drivers side front behind enjectoe theres a line of little core / freeze plug holes. ( id never heard of them thought it was part of solid engine block.) well the one i mentioned is leaking water. Has anyone else had this and is there a way of removing and replacing it or is it now a scrapper. Car info 406 2002 hdi 90 rapier, 223000 mls .

There doesn't seem to be much experience on these. I'm not even sure what sort the are but your approach will probably depend on access.

Favourite seems to be clean it up and gob JB weld in...

Thanks for reply steve, yeh ive not seen or hesrd of anyone having done any home diy on this type of job, been to a independent peugeot specialist garage near me and spoken to mechanic and he told me if you get them to do it its a case of removing fuel rail and fuel pump. And timing belt and the rest, possible looking at £500+ for parts,labour, + vat. But he as advised to try a product called steal seal first, has anybody had any luck with this or change core plugs any info or experience on this type of work gratefully recieved.

This was quite a common problem in the olden days, before cars used antifreeze but I think you can still buy core plugs, if you can get to it drive a spike of some sort into it and lever to one side and it should come out, the new one has to be hammered in using a drift as near as possible to the size of the hole in the plug.

If you cant get to it to do that, clean it up as best you can and fill it with body filler, pushing it well in so that it goes through the hole and spreads out behind, I have done that quite successfully.
