need advoce maf sensor
In the last 2 weeks the car has got flatter and flatter , I drove home last night and you had really push the car hard on throttle to get it to go, nothing like I'am used to !
Having read the threads on here, at first I thought it might be the EGR but you needed to use 3k revs to get any response , so I disconnected the MAF as recommended to see if any effect and I got my old performance back!!
Obviously the MAF sensor needs either cleaning or replacing, my question is IS IT OK TO RUN THE CAR WITH THE MAF SENSOR DISCONNECTED, WILL DO ANY HARM ????

Re: need advoce maf sensor
Hi, im no mechanic, but i think the maf sensors the amount of air the engine is intaking ie at idle or at speed, so it will the send this to the ECU to then control how much fuel is required to preduce the most economical output, so im quessing it my not harm the car but may run very rich and spluttery if you know what i mean. If im wrong then il hold my hands up. But thought id reply, if anyone else can shed anymore light.
Dave.

It won't do any harm as such but it'll be far from ideal as it'll be on base settings & running very rich.
ie: poor economy, don't waste you money on cheep Chinese ones.
Get an o.e V.D.O Siemens one from E.C.P or G.S.F, or try online.

Re: need advoce maf sensor
Assuming this is a diesel engine it won't run rich because if you increase the fuel in you will increase the power out as the diesel has no throttle control when you press the accelerator it just increases the fuel input. The only thing that can make it run rich is an obstruction in the air supply.
With the MAF disconnected the fuel input will revert to a pre programmed default setting and reduce the amount of fuel available at low revs, typically below 2000 rpm, hence the poor performance. It wont hurt the car to use it like this, all its doing is reducing the power output.
I have never bought a cheap new one but have so far had success with a used original one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-406- ... Sw241Yd24y

Hi, just joined this site as I have a2003 406 110 estate in blue, replaced maf sensor with a cheap £30 one and it did improve acceleration from idle to 2000rpm. done approx. 2000 miles but now realised there is too much smoke coming out the back and on slight cruising it seems to faulter them pick up ever so slightly Are the V D O MAF sensors really good value for money at £90. Car has done 690000miles from newdirtydirtydiesel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 7:38 pmcouldn't have put it better myself

Yes,
But make sure it is a genuine one & is new there's alot of crap on ebay.
Your smoking & hesitation could be due to your E.G.R valve,
because with that low millage it'll have been lot's of start stop's.
Very bad for a diesel
Blanking it off is a very good idea anyway
Mine's long gone

Re: need advoce maf sensor
Some people have had good results with a cheap eBay MAF sensor, however it's a bit of a gamble - there are always offers on genuine ones at ECP and the like.
My wife's old Picasso had the MAF unplugged for 4 years with no consequence other than it somehow affected her ability to park.
I'm with DDD, definitely blank the EGR - I've done it on all my diesel cars to date.
Is it a typo? I read the mileage as 690,000 - which is quite respectable and probably now due it's 9th cambelt.

Re: need advoce maf sensor
I couldn't agree more. Get yourself a genuine MAF the cheapest way you can, look out for special discounts on ECP or CP4L, (carparts4less which is the same outfit as ECP but often cheaper). GSF seem to offer big discounts off a higher initial price, but worth a look.
A good MAF makes such a difference to response and drivability that I would consider swapping it every year or two, therefore it pays to spot when they're cheap.
Definitely lose the EGR. My 2.2 pulls well from about 1200 RPM and returns about 3 mpg more since I blanked it off.

Re: need advoce maf sensor
Sorry bit of a blonde moment 69000 miles will look at disconnecting the EGR sounds a good way and cheap too.
Re: need advoce maf sensor
Just ordered a VDO MAF sensor and a blanking plate for the EGR from Ebay. Will tell how this goes. Mind you the fuel economy does not seem to be as good as my last 406 which had 130000 miles on it when I sold it for this one. Hope these two things makes good improvements. Thanks for all your help. No doubt I will be needing more later.
Re: need advoce maf sensor
I fitted a QHazel maf last year and power was improved especially the top end, but at the moment it's very flat below 1500 rpm, I blocked the pipe from solenoid to egr as suggested here and no change do you think egr stuck open???

Re: need advoce maf sensor
Probably,
Best way is to blank from both ends,
Flat below 1500rpm's could be lot's of things, vac leak, boost leak, low fuel pressure ect, ect.
Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Re: need advoce maf sensor
I now find I need a new MAF for my bro's 2.2 HDi.
Best offers I've seen so far:
£103 from CP4L with discount code
£108 from ECP with discount code
£100 from GSF on eBay but may not be the real deal, described as "Brand: GSF Premium"
£93 for "Genuine VDO" eBAy ref 163183084776, (various other listings at same price).
Anyone seen a genuine Siemens/VDO for less?
