Hi I just drove down to hull approx 100 mls , car ran well with the MAF sensor disconnected but !!!!

pulled up and a rattle was coming under the bonnet and when I had a look with a torch, the inside edge of the auxi belt is starting to shred !!!!!

My question is how long will it last ???, once they start to go , do they shred completely, or if I cut the loose strands off will it last a while ???

OR will I have get it done locally , how much does it normally cost to fit ??

Best get it sorted ASAP.
It's only because of the proximity of the belt - it's a common thing for it to shred and get tangled in the cam belt - which isn't an ideal thing to happen.
Aux belts are cheap and fairly easy to swap, a local garage should be up to the job at a reasonable cost - cheaper than the alternative.
Also get them to check the pulleys too.

wot he said with bells on, the belt might be failing due to age or the crank pulley might be breaking up, best get it sorted pronto whatever the cause. Aux belt failures often take out the cam belt and, although HDi's are designed to break the cam followers in the even of a cam belt failure they're not always that lucky.

Two for a disintegrating crankshaft pulley, if you can get close enough to it you will probably find cracks in the rubber.

Do you know the history of the car?, how many miles have you put on it?, do you know if the crank pulley has ever
been replaced.
Mine on my 2002 car started to rattle at 105k, so was replaced with a high quality Cortico one, the belt was done
at the same time obviously, but now 15k later the auto tensioner needs replacing.

So if your unsure of the above & plan on keeping the car, do all three especially if paying someone to do it
As all three affect each other & it will be less labour costs because of the replacement procedure.

Not a problem for me as I do it myself, just an annoyance

I've had the car for over 7yrs now cover about 100k , now showing 166k
timing belt was done at about 115k and the vibration pulley about the same time. showing my ignorance on the subject is the vibration pulley the one the auxi belt runs on ?
I've got the car booked in tomorrow to fit belt + full kit, bit steep at 215 but have not time to look around, garage was recommended by a guy that lives local so fingers crossed !
PS: I hate using a garage I do not know !!!!!!!

Provided you are getting a new aux drive belt, crankshaft pulley, tensioner and idler pulleys, the price is probably OK. It would cost you at least £120-£130 to buy all the bits from a good discounter and it will take an hour or two to fit everything. Once done, it should all be good for another 5 years.

Got the auxi belt kit fitted 2day

kit was 80, and they charged 1 hour labour, total cost was £150 less than they quoted which makes a change !!

I wonder whats next !!!!

Sounds like a good result from a decent garage
Can I guess the next thing to go wrong? I'm going to go with starter motor.

Whatever's next it'll still be cheaper than a new car
I won't give you my list of doom yet, I'll post closer to fixing it as I'm nursing it through the winter at the moment
I'll just say that I've replaced too much already to give up yet, still only on 120k so hopefully loads of life left yet.
I know of examples with over 500k

yes I agree, its only needed tyres last year
just need to get it through its MOT in feb, I'am quite sure they will punch a hole in the sills some where they have to patches on up to now
just going to get another MAF sensor fitted, I'm running it with it disconnected, my guy at the garage is trying to search one out for me, driving over very twisty moor roads to work at the minute, lets hope springs don't like the last 406 did !!!
166k on the motor , still going strong
