gearbox noise
Ive just bought a 406 dt cheap, and it drives spot on the only thing wrong is that it crunches when you put it into third this does not happen in any other gear, can anyone help.

That sounds nearly exactly the same as mine!
It's an 1.9dt ex-taxi and was bought with 193k on the clock! And everything ran fine apart from when changing into 3rd it went crunch.
Asked some local mechanics i knew and they all reconed its probably a worn syncro-mesh (not entirely sure what all that is) but after a few weeks i'd learnt the 'knack'. This means going into 3rd slowly and on a bad day putting into neutral then into 3rd.
Oh, also found that although it was running fine the front brakes were knackered, timing belt and alternator belt were shagged, front anti-roll bar links were done and front suspension arm bushes needed replacing. Then the injection pump went at 201k!
Not so cheap after all for me
Still, its a comfy car to drive

This has been on here before, and it pointed to the gearbox mounting.
Also check the selector linkages for wear.
The puggy boxes are pretty tough, I doubt very much that the gears are worn here.

its funny you should mention the fact that the gearbox mounting maybe worn because when i was driving it in top gear everytime i took my foot of the throttle pedal the gear stick did quite a bit of moving.Welton wrote:This has been on here before, and it pointed to the gearbox mounting.

Yes my 1st gear is the same, needs to be 'eased' in.mjb wrote:Does anyone else have a 'funny' synchro on 1st that means you can only enter the gear under about 2mph (slow walking pace), or after double-declutching, or is it just mine? Pain on the ol' left leg when in slow-moving traffic jams :/
Actually though I think most puggy boxes do this. Although for some reason Women are more able to engage 1st gear at anything upto 20MPH

Gear change
Definately gear linkage or mounting, mass movement of gearstick points to this. Pug boxes are tough, if not slick, I always see them as a slow box, taking your time through the gears and not snatching at the box will help.
