My new 406 project #2

Post by GingerMagic »

Well, seeing as its been nearly 2 years without owning an old China Blue diesel 406 estate - I thought its about time I bought another one..

Its Alistairs old 406 ( Doggy's Brother ) which I bought as its quite a good base car but with several niggles that need sorting out - and as in the next few months I have* volunteered* to clear out my Step mums shed which is chock a block with crapola - no point dirtying the wifes Picasso, or indeed the family T4, and buying, taxing and insuring this 406 works out cheaper than a skip..!!

Its a 53 plate Hdi110 ( maybe with a few extra horses.. ) Executive, with possibibly the best satnav screen I've seen for ages. Less than 90K on the clock, with an MOT until mid September.( £150 per year tax )
Its had a slight* front end knock, which needs the headlights sorting before the MOT, along with the fuel flap light on the dash - climate control is as random as the rear wiper, and none of the doors line up properly..
However, the engine is cracking - smooth, responsive, and the 3.5 hour journey home was effortless and I got home feeling like I've only driven a short distance - I had forgotton how great the 406 is on a long trip :cheesy:
Also, apart from the forementioned rear wiper and climate control - everything seems to work fine.!

I'll keep updating this thread with the good and bad bits I find wrong with the car, but so far I'm pleased with my purchase.

Hey, that looks rather splendid

Sat nav screen - don't you have to give it some cooling fans to stop it overheating and going all streaky?
Air con - might just be running low on gas?
Rear wiper - broken wire where it goes from the roof to the tailgate? :(

I think this one is the one to replace the one in France, however Alistair's Nephew in law was selling his 406 which is better than this one - so he bought that and sold his old one...

Steve, Doggy has gone through the car with PP2000, and the climate doesn't work as one of the sensors is duff.
The rear wiper comes on when you start the car, and the rear window heater doesn't work, so a possible water ingress problem..

I've just spent a little time on it during my lunch* hour...

I've removed and cleaned the fan/sensor combo behind the interior light, removed and contact cleaned the rear wiper relay, removed the number plate lights ( definitely a D8 tailgate on a D9 ) and bent the headlight brackets back into shape - I have some spare headlights so I'll fit these during the week.

Not sure if this has helped but can't do any harm....

Just realigned the drivers side doors - they were hitting at the top which was taking the paint off - but 10mins on the hinges and latches has sorted it..

Getting there :cheesy:

Headlights next.

Yes, not to worry..

I removed the headlights today - turns out that every fixing point on them was broken...

Image

However, my spare lights will do until I find a nice passenger side one ( my spare is a bit yellow )

On a positive note - have a butchers at this beauty....

I'll burn a Sat Nav CD one day and check to see if it works.

It probably is..... :cheesy:

Today I plugged in PP2000 to check some bits and bobs - mostly the cabin temperature sensor as Doggy said it was reading a little high....

Image

He isn't wrong - it seems the sensor thinks the inside of the car is hotter than the Sun

Ah well, I'll add it to the shopping list when I go to the scrappers.

I checked the comms unit actuators and it seems the switch for the rear wiper is working fine, so I'll pick up a new relay - if this doesn't work then I'll try to find a complete D9 tailgate or loom.

Let me just refix the middle seatbelt that was undone to avoid the usual situation of folding the rear seat and then getting it jammed, I'll simply lift up the back seat to have a look and see......

Image

What the actual flip..!!
I'm not sure I've ever seen so much rust under the seats - my old exec had a bit but that was a high mileage taxi - this is a low mileage example..
Even more annoyingly, I binned a set of immaculate rear seat bases that had been in my shed for many years as I'll probably never need them :(
I think people ( me included) just wash leather seats and let them dry naturally, however I guess the water has to go somewhere....

I can't even see the bolt location anyway..

So, here is the scrap yard list so far.

NS headlight
middle rear seat belt + bolt
evaporator sensor
D8 number plate bulb holders - yes its a D8 tailgate on a D9 :frown:
Rear wiper relay.

On a positive note - the drivers front foot well is bone dry :cheesy:

That MFD screen should be a museum piece :cheesy: what's the crack with them when they go all weird? can they really not be fixed?

The water under the seat is a strange one, it's not being driven up from under the car somehow?
