It was a FAI timing chain kit, I bought it through Lymm Engine Components, Full kit with guides, tensioners Chain and Oil pump drive chain.
The only way to check wear is with software that measures difference between crank and cam position and gives a degree reading, My new chain started off at 7.9 degrees which is correct and quickly increased to 11.5 which is way too much, You could also hear it, I stripped it and took photo's of the tensioner at full stretch and of the new and old chains stretched next to each other. I had to buy the replacement kit and send the old one back along with a oil sample and within 2 weeks I received a refund, but no explanation.
I have now done around 20000 miles on current one and at moment it seems ok,
My current problem is oil level rising due to diesel getting in, It has been a prob with these engines, Either injector seals leak, or blocked DPF causing constant regens, I have changed both and still got the problem.
I was fancying a 407 estate but herd quite a few horror stories

Welp, after all the faff, we are still no closer to getting a new car (or sleep for that matter). Got a nice new driveway instead though!

We did go look at the CX-5 2.2 diesel and it was "nice". No low end grunt, though, and all seems to come after 2000rpm in one big lump (reminded me of an XUD). Not a patch on the 2.2 HDI in my 407. That said, it's very roomy and enough to swallow a pram with all the crap that goes with it, along with the twins. What stopped me buying it is that it will primarily be driven by the wife pretty short distances with an occasional motorway blast to Cornwall. It seems to have an odd DPF system, where it uses diesel itself to regenerate. If you stop the engine mid-regen, it dumps unburnt diesel into the oil sump . Overtime, this gets overfilled and the engine is ruined.

Probably want a petrol but CX-5 petrols are weaklings - N/A 2.0... and it's a heavy car to lug around.

Uhh.... we bought an X3, 2012 2.0d. It's actually lovely to sit in and has decent power.

Hope it lasts and doesn't cost the earth in repairs. Happily, there are plenty of diag cables for sale for that dealer level diagnostics so hopefully I can do a lot myself.

If it helps, my Fathers 2012 320d which he had from brand new and got rid of a few months ago was totally faultless during his ownership and it finished up with 150k+ on the clock.

I'd say that was a good choice, depreciation should be low and they're good quality motors to be fair, I think the early X3 (the ugly ones) were a bit pants but the later ones much much better.

I hate stop-start.

Still, I won't be driving it much - I am still in my 407.
