Help with Dilution ratio - chemicals

I've got some stuff that needs diluting to 1:60

Is that 1 part chemical plus 60 parts water or 59 parts water to make 60 'units' overall i.e. 1:59

A 1L container = 1000ml

1000/60 = 16.66mls, surely I'd then need 1 x 16.66mls chemical to 59 x 16.66mls water = 1000mls total.

If I added 60 parts of water I'd be 'diluting' the mix incorrectly, this isn't for a nuclear power station or anything vital but it's got me a little confused.

What would you do?

I always get confuzed by this sort of thing, mixing 2 stroke for instance, do you put the oil in and top it up to 5 litres or put the oil in and then add exactly 5 litres, making just over 5 litres (5.2 litres for 25:1)? So the way I look at is, if it was 1:1 would you put 5 litres in the can and then, er...

So yes, one part chemical plus 60 parts water. if the total has to be exactly 1 litre then 1000/61= 16.4, 60x16.4=983.6 of water, 16.4ml of chemical, i.e tip 16.4ml of chemical into your litre container and then top it up until it's full. Or if the can has some space in it, stick 1 litres in and then add 1/60th of a litre of chemical (or 16.6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 recurring ml), give it a shake and then spray it on your neighbours

I'd say it's 1 part chemical + 60 parts water, but in reality 1:60 or 1:59 is pretty much the same ting.
I would just add to your nearest estimate of the right amount of water

16.67ml is just over 3 5ml teaspoons...

I went with 1 dose chemical + 60 doses of warty - giving a total of 61 doses.

No-one died.
