Evening all. I've owned my current 406 since 2015 having original bought it as an emergency holiday vehicle when our daily failed. 2 weeks after purchase, we covered 2000miles through France and it was superb. But sadly, it's been out of action for a while now due to a few issues. More about that in the relevant sections. Due to a change of circumstances I now need it working! Anyway, glad to have found this place and look forward to my stay here.

I too bought my first 406 as a stop gap, as it had a new MOT and cambelt - it only lasted a couple more years before I upgraded to a newer 406 and since then I've had them ever since ( apart from a brief spell of a year of so )

I think I'm now on number 5, but I've used another 2 as donor vehicles.

As a round town car, or a long distance car, the 406 is great and very underated - pity they are getting thin on the ground now as it's making spares harder to find.

Will do! There are a few annoyingly and I'm now working through them.
I put the car in to storage when it went wrong and whilst sitting it also broke the two front springs and an ABS ring.
So, so far I've fitted new springs and top mounts and the ABS rings are on order. I'll do both at the front as the the "good" one is quite poor looking. I've also refurbished the front brakes as it was all a bit dry with being sat for so long.
The main reason for it being mothballed is a lack of power and brakes.

Ooh, a 2.2 HDI estate exec, that's a lot of emergency vehicle 2003 too, one of the last.

I'd had a 110 a couple of years prior to that and was really impressed by it. When I needed to find a good reliable car to do the holiday in, the 406 was the first choice. It was £600 and I fitted a new radiator (the old one had been broken and bodged so I didn't want to risk it), a new condenser for the aircon and new anti roll bar links.
Sitting on the superb French toll roads in a comfortable, leather clad, icy cold cabin made the holiday so much more enjoyable.
It's this very reason I felt the car needs a second chance after all these years sitting and probably why it was never sold as a spare or repair car. Hopefully it can be brought back up to scratch.

I've had 2 of the 2.2hdi executive estates, the first was a 2004 ex taxi which wasn't great but with a little time and help from here became quite a nice car in the end
This was then used as a donor a few years later for a replacement and lower mileage GLX model, which I kept for ages.
Now I'm on another 2.2hdi executive estate, which is a bit of a mess but it's for dump trips and the like so I'm not bothered

It sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on it already. Lack of power? I think the 2.2 usually has problems with all the vacuum piping and sometimes the swirl flap actuator rod, er, falls off

I made enquiries when it initially went wrong and the vacuum system was mentioned. Once I get chance I'll create a post running through the issues. Plus I also want to check the knowledge base section first to see if the faults have already been covered.

Yes please do let us know how you get on. It's been mentioned to me a few times that this board appears to be dying but when I see there are 30, 40, 50 "guests" rummaging about on here I'm pretty sure it's still a very useful resource and we don't get much actual dialogue because we have most things covered, er, somewhere.

A belated welcome

Ginger & Doggy are the resident 2.2hdi guru's

Blocked cat / dpf, sludged up or stuck egr , failing maf or map sensor, vacuum lines, swirl flap actuator,
Sticking variable vanes on the turbo, blocked fuel filter, low fuel pressure.

Really need diagnostics on it (pp2k) & someone who knows how to interpret the findings
