speedo work when it wants too

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Hello, I had this problem on my D8 a while back. It ended up being the speed sensor and sender unit. I got that fixed by the stealers a few years back it cost me £140 including labour. :x

What size engine is it ?

Either 1.9 or 2.1

Reason for asking is the 2.1 speedo and 1.9 are slightly different, I believe.

I have a 2.1 with the problem - it's a dry joint in the PCB of the instruments which I'm hoping to get sorted at work soon.

Other candidates are the ECU under the glovebox, or the sender on the gearbox depending on the engine.

Do a search around the forums, there's plenty to go on.

Don't know if it's the same as the 2.1, but I had a 1998 2.1td and I had an intermittent speedo, very simular symtpoms. The problem was a small box behind the glovebox (accessible from the footwell). It cost me £40 and was an easy DIY job.

if you have a 3 wire VSS then its the VSI under the glove box, if you have a 2 wire VSS then its the VSS itself
the VSS is best accessed from underneath, its just above where the o/s driveshaft enters the gearbox, its coverd with a cloth heatshield

VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor

VSI - Vehicle Speed Interface
