A weekend car :-)

Post by Captain Jack »

Hi all,

I am sure this is just a phase and I'll get over it, but for the past few weeks I've been looking at various 4x4 cars to drive on the weekends around fields and hills on the weekends. Can anyone come up with some suggeestions of what I could get for relatively cheap (~£500) and small (Jeep Wrangler size). I've been looking at various 'Zooks', Jeeps and even Lada Nivas but nothing seems to be either cheap or tickle my fancy.... Would prefer a diesel and something cheap to run and insure (it would only be used on very rare occasions)

This is all Dai's fault flashing his Zook around here and making me think naughty thoughts :P

get an impreza 2.0 gl 4wd, or even maybe a turbo one, or go the whole 9 yards and get a P1, a proven world rally winner over and over, bloody fast on the road or in the dirt and handles outstandingly well
could you ask for more :P

Sorry james, but I am not looking for speed. I am looking for something that can go over mountains! And did I mention cheap to run/insure/buy? ;-)

Glad to be of assistance!

For that kind of money you'll either only get a zook or a niva (or something big, old and rotten :frown: ).

The problem with zook SJ's is that they're bloody uncomfortable, and the bodywork is made out of cardboard i.e, first time you get it wet it'll rot and fall off. Also the electrics can be a bit dodgy, but we're used to that aren't we? On the plus side the chassis are awesome, I've never seen a rotten one! They're very capable straight out of the box, cheap to buy and run, difficult to break and easy to fix, cheap and easy to mod, highly addictive.

Vitaras are better on the road but not so good off it. Lots of cheap ones around now, rotten bodies, strong chassis. Not as cheap to run / insure etc. Still plenty of laughs to be had, especially if you don't mind denitng it! Expnsive tax!

Bad side of the lada is that it's made out of putty, every time you put a spanner on a nut it'll round. And the bodywork is made out of the same stuff as the zook's, less economical to run, parts are less readily available. Positives, it's a lot more comfortable and can be a bit more poky (the 1700 cossack is quite nice).

So it's horses for courses mate, if you're determined to have a diseasel, get an SJ and stick a diesel in it (1.5 vauxhall or 1.9 pug are the favorite conversions) but I'm guessing you want a toy not a project.

If it's just summer fun and you ain't bothered about what it's like on the road I'd have to recommend an SJ 410. Best laughs per pound ratio by miles. £500 should get you a reasonable one with long T&T. SJ 413s and Samurais are slightly nicer on the road thanks to the 1300cc engine, but they're geared differently so there isn't much in it off road, if fact many people say the 410 is better :|. Insurance? just renewed mine TPF&T on a classic policy wit 3K mile limit - £99! :D Tax £115 :D . Go on, get a zook, you knows you wants to!

I'm sure a scooby could fly over mountains! (although I dare say its wheels wouldn't really touch the ground on the way down) plus they're cheap to maintain cos they never go wrong, and they're 4wd.... What more could you want man? :P

mjb: Did I mention cheap to run (mpg needs to be OVER 10, not under)/insure/buy? :P

Dai: Looks like you're right. My uncle used to have 3 Nivas and loved them all off road. Top speed was about 80mph but who cares about that when off-roading. I quite liked it as well as it seemed to be capable of things a BMW X3 would struggle to do (off-road). His were all 1.7L units (why are they called Rivas/Cossaks here?). Here's one of them (yes, that's me very young in the picture - shut up!):

I think you can pick up a decent one for about 600ukp here (with little rust, running etc).

On the Suzuki side, I quite like the Vitara to be honest. It's small and would be perfect for what I want. SJ's aren't bad either, but looks like most have holes somewhere in the bodywork so it would have to be dry out if you dont wanna get wet.

Engines look a bit... weak. 1l and 1.3l are what you get in Fiestas - is that enough for a 4wd? Do these have locking diffs and switchable gear ratios? I know for a fact that Subarus don't and Nivas do :P

Cheers Dai! :cheesy:

The engines are fine off road, 'cos it's not all about power. Mine struggles to reach 70 on the road (but that's more to do with the big MT tyres), if you're really lucky you might get one that'll approach 80. Vitaras were much more car-like in performance, which is exactly why they aren't as good off road.

They don't have locking diffs in the front and rear axles, athough some vitaras came wilth Limited slip diffs in the back. Zooks don't have centre differentials, so it's when it's in 4WD the power is always sent to both the front and rear axles, it's effectively the same as having a LR with the centre difflock engaged, when you're on the road you stick it in 2WD, and that's rear wheel drive only, good for doing donuts on wet grass or gravel  8) . The transfer box does have settings for 4WD high and low ratios.

Locking diffs for fitting into the front or rear axles of SJs are only about £160 each though, I got one for the rear on my shopping list
