Should have done this earlier! I bought a 97 2ltr turbo SRI 63k from the auction 9months ago to sell on. I was trolling around in a Probe 24v which got re-ended and written off Thought Id use the Pug for a couple of weeks whilst I looked for another car. Suprise! I really liked it, so still got it
Thanks to James for keeping it going. It was good to find there was a site for us Pug owners.
By the by looking throgh the service book I see that the cambelt needs changing at 72k as its taken the car ten years to get to 63k do you think it might be a good idea to change on its nexy service at 65k?
as yours is a pre '98 D8 then you will have the early service schedule which is once a year or every 9,000 miles, but my car is on the late schedule, every two years or 18,000 miles, but i still change the oil every 6 months or 4,500 miles and use fully synthetic oil
so you could just do an oil change for now, but if your not gonna keep it then is there any point
oh, welcome by the way

Maybe - depends where it's serviced because a main stealer will want over £600 (or was it £800-odd they quoted me?) to do the job whereas a smaller garage may charge under £200.
You should probably get it done though as rubber does degrade over time - take a 10 year old elastic band for example...
Yes I know I'm being hypocritical (been saying I need mine changing for the last 30k miles but can't afford to pay to get it done), but I really do intend to do mine soon! Really... Once I figure out how the heck to access the damn thing that is!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Thanks James MJB
The reason I thought about changing it is because my mates VW LT van has just been scrapped when the cambelt shreded at 65K. the belt needed changing at 80k Mechanic said what you said, belts' nearly 10 years old so becomes brittle. A real sh*t, 5 pot turbo diesel engines are astronomic money so had to scrap van.
How much is a belt?
the belt is about £15, depends where you get it from, also get a tensioner, works out cheaper to buy a kit at about £40 and you get the belt and tensioner, and the water pump is about £45, plus about 3 hours labour @ say £100
so:
£40+£45+£300 = £395 + vat
= about £470

oh yeah i forgot you will also need to add some anti-freeze and a water pump gasket to that, and if its a garage that overcharge then an extra hour labour for the water pump

I was just talking to the bloke that does my servicing and he reckons about £100 plus I supply the bits, sounds cheaper than another engine!
Gonna book it in next week.
