Well I have learnt and am now paying for it, 3 points put my insurance up by £167!

and I got a bollocking at work.

i got 3 points and £60 fine for being caught doing 52mph in a 30 zone (im not bragging, was doing 27mph through the town and was accelerating to leave, was caught right before the national speed limit sign). PSNI caught me on a hairdrier gun.
3 points didnt change my insurance at all, and my company says no matter how many points i have they wont put up my quote .... keeps me happy.

Another warning to all! The old bill are now rolling out digital camera's to replace the Gatso's. Your fine money probably went towards the new role out. I source tells me that these new camera's have a 3G modem and everyday they are programmed to upload captured images to a Police server via ftp, so now the old bill don't even have to touch the cameras. They are also higher up so chavs can't spray the lenses easily.

On the BBC website if you search for "Safety cameras" you can usually get the dates and where-a-bouts of where the old bill might be hiding. I usually look at that depending on where I'm driving.

The National Speed limit on the motorway it's 70mph. Most people are doing around 80 these days. The 70mph speed limit was set over 20 years ago and some people argue that it should be increased to 80 because cars have better brakes, etc.. But what I have seen is the general population of people on the roads. In my street alone the amount of cars has increased to almost double over the last 10 years. I think 70 is reasonable because covering 70 miles in an hour isn't that bad, unless of course you are an off duty Police officer with a 3.0litre v6 Vauxall vectra doing 150mph testing your driving skills... But! that's another story..

Speeding once if often said to be once too often. But I disagree.

I see no problem in cruising the motorways at 80 when traffic permits.

Though, I never speed in 20, 30 and 40 zones. They're that speed for a reason. And in 20 zones, I'll rarely go over 15. Just to be sure. 20 zones generally involve kids playing or walking around and they are NOT worth that extra 5 or 10 mph!

I travel through a 50 zone each day to work, its an open country road and I see no point in doing 50. It seems likes its just an excuse to post a speed camera unit there from time to time to catch out folk that miss the 50 signs. (there are no repeaters along the entire length of the 4 mile stretch).
I travel at 60 through it. I drive to the conditions ahead of me. If I can see a mile ahead of me and any and all traffic apporaching the road from side roads, I say 60 is ok.

Well kids, I hardly ever break speed limits these days. Spent far too much time when I was younger hairing around in my nova/uno/fiesta like my arse was on fire . Isn't weird that the first car that made me slow down a bit was my Mondeo, it's almost like you've got a big car that can easily do the speed, so there's no point anymore:oops:. I now find my '6 far too relaxing and enjoyable to rush the journey. Often get to 65 then hit the cruise . And I always try to stick to the limits in the built up areas, but sometimes the inappropriate limits really piss me off (for the benefit of Darren and Neil, wtf is the Goat Mill still 30mph? ).

Funnily enough one of the guys at work has just been banned for a month (no licence points!) for doing 110mph on the M6 toll. He said his girlfriend overheard the magistrates saying to each other "It was only 110..."

I can't believe they've stuck talivans over the toll road It was a great place to drive with the average speed about 100 and the motorway coppers happy to let you overtake them at well over a ton as long as you weren't driving like a dick. Heck the "relaxed" approach to speed was the only reason to pay to use it a lot of the time!

i got 3 points 2 years ago coming home from luton airport at 3am :/ 54mph in a 40 zone (just outside dunstable), i would accept it more if it was a built up area, but not sure what the problem is when its open fields around and a wide straight road.

i heard that its because they will be building houses up there in the future that the council wanted to keep it at 30 to save changing it back when they do build up there . i dunno if its true but you never know

It's interesting that they have taken your speed from various (curvy) points all over your car. There was an enquiry into this type of reading being falsely high due to 'creep' of the laser (think it was the 20/20 laser gun?).

If the van is down on the road at your level they will target the number plate but maybe you can't do that from a bridge? still makes me wonder how accurate it is though.

Having said all this, you have admitted you were doing 90 anyway

As far as I am aware, the users of the guns are trained to aim them at the most reflective part of the car (i.e. either the numberplate or the headlights.) It just so happens that on most moddern cars headlights have some sort of curves.

The reflective surface is what helps bounce the laser back to the device. So for example if you were to cover your car in angular carbon fibre panels as suggested by turbolag, then you probably wouldn't get caught by a laser device.
