Battery Warning Light, is it an Alternator problem?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Battery Warning Light, is it an Alternator problem?

Post by GeordieBoy »

I've had the Battery Warning Light come on, followed by the ABS and Air Bag Light. I turned the car off, and it would not start again, so I recharged the battery with my charger. Put it back on and the warning lights went out, then after about 10 starts (after driving for 10mins after each start) the battery light came on again followed ABS and Air Bag Light. I'm assuming its the Alterntor, but could it be anything else?

Grab a multimeter, stick it on any old 12v line. The reading should increase after you start the engine. If it doesn't your alternator's probably toast.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I dont have a Multimeter, I'm just gonna have to take it down to my local garage to have tested.

If it is the Alternator how much are them and are there easy to do?

I seem to remember that the alternator for the HDi is very expensive. I'm sure Supafrisk said something once.

The Diesel alternator has a higher Amps rating than the petrol so will cost more.

when mine went it was something silly like £120 for a recon one so i found one in a scrappers for £40 , and on the 2.1Td it was a twat of a job to do and the diesel one is rated higher than a petrol one , when i got mine i was told the basic model 1.9Td 's were 90 amp where as the higher spec models were 120 amp or higher

I've just had it confirmed, I need a new Alternator.

Had 1 priced at £182 + Labour.

Gonna check out the local Peugeot Clinic who break crash damaged 406's.

you could have yours reconed for roughly the same price as one from a scrapper but it could take a day or 2 , if you can live without your car that long thats your best option i think

Thanks for that I will look into it as I have a 2nd car being a Ford Sierra.

Typical that things go wrong the day I was selling it to a bloke on ebay who had travelled from Birmingham to Newcastle on the train.

I really do think that me and my 406 are cursed, or maybe someone up there does not want me to sell it.

Thanks mate but the engine is the best part of the car.

LMK if you have a Cosworth 2.9 v6 24v for less then £150 and a deal is done. :cheesy:

That is the standard rate, not only for that engine but it often includes the full scorpio car as well.
