Squealing from the back wheel

I'm wondering what would cause a squealing to develop on my rear drivers side wheel, the squeel starts at about 25-30mph and is always present in reverse and sometimes goes away when breaking but not always.

I'm thinking it will be either the brakes rubbing (that brake has squeeled for a while before now) or the bearing having problems. Is there anything else likely to be the cause?

Thought I would ask on here before I take the wheel off for advice on what to look at.

i would say that if it was the bearing it would squeal as soon as you started
moving, sounds more like a sticking brake caliper or brake dust. best
advice wait on jameslxtd or if u can't wait go take the wheel off and have a look
at the caliper and disc see if theres any sign of rubbing on the disc

I had similiar noise when my rear brake caliper was sticking probably not a bearing. The 406 also has anti squeel pads on the rear discs, may just be these are missing/knackered.

But my money is on sticky caliper. Take the wheel off and see if you can slide the caliper by hand, if you can't it probably sticking. Could either be the bolts the caliper slides on or the piston. I'd try and push the piston in a bit if it wont go back it the piston its the piston. If it goes in see if you still can't slide caliper, if you can't then its the bolts/slides.

I think you can get new bolts, but they probably just need clean and grease. The caliper piston isn't available seperatley at pug (i had to get one from scrap yard) but you can get new seal kit (~£10) or caliper (~£120 ish)

i had a sticky caliper on an old car i stripped it down
you can is to strip it down use something
like copper grease on the moving parts, with the
other cars i've had its got me out of lots of
sticky probs lol

I think I've found the problem, it would appear to be the handbrake. I took the wheel off, the calipers are slightly rubbing but not badly and the bearings seem to be fine. It's actually the handbrake shoes rubbing. I'm going to get it inot a garage soon to be looked at as I had the whole handbrake assembly replaced less than a year ago!
