Steering or suspension rattle? NOW FIXED

Post by 406LXi-TD »

Hi

Just had my faithful Pug MOT'd and only failed on 2 front tyres, exhaust and side light

I bought a Vectra estate to replace my Pug, but have decided to stick with my older, higher mileage french beast (2.1 TD surprises a lot of Golf TDCi's he he  )

The problem is a worrying rattle that appears to come up through the steering column sometimes. It only happens over speed bumps, pot holes or when I am steering to the right (any amount of lock) at speed and I hit a tiny bump. It never happens when steering to the left and only rarely on the straight. The best way to describe the noise would be like bouncing two ball bearings together for a short time, and sometimes it may be just a single rattle.

I mentioned it to the MOT mechanic before the test and he said after the test that he couldn't see anything obvious and that it was a really solid car and great for it's age.
After trawling through the forums for hours, I have only come across one possible answer, and that was someone with loose bolts connecting the steering rack to the sub frame
Has anyone else experienced this problem or similar?

I was gutted about the 2 tyres in the MOT as they,ve only done about 12k (hmm is there a link to my problem or could it be my style of driving  yep - another link maybe? Never get tired of smugly using the turbo to its best!)

Happy to say that I found the fault today.

The link rod that connects the anti roll bar to the Macphereson strut on the OSF had sheared at the upper ball joint  The broken link rod was rattling against the inner wing. How the hell did this pass the MOT???
