The drivers side door lock of my 406 is becomming increasingly hard to use these days. Usually when I put the key in the door, it will keep on trying to spin round and round and then eventually will become pretty darn hard to then move to lock or unlock the car?
Is this a common problem with the 406 - Any means of rectifying it?
I can't use the central locking as I got pushed into the pool last summer - bye bye key!
My locks on my saloon used to turn and turn, I never bothered looking at it, as I used to use the key. The question pops up every now and again, but nobody seems to have a solution.
I'd even heard once that it's a security device and there's a magnet involved that would release if the battery run flat and the locks would work as normal. Think it might be a 406 wives tale though.

Hi there, my sisters car used to do that until I stripped the door lock mechanism out and removed the broken piece of aluminium in the lock..its not that difficult to do really, once you have got the door panel off.
406 D8 door locks are very good, when the key spins in the barrel its basically the lock preventing it from being unlocked as it thinks its being picked, when it does it using the car its usually a sign the key is worn out

My drivers door does this although I don't think it's worn out as it's never been used. Spins happily with the key in it.

How do you start your car then? Note James said the key not the lock! Easy way to find out would be to try your spare key in the lock or if you haven't got one, take your main key over to a key cutter and make sure they understand you think it's worn down (so they don't copy the wearing)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
This is also the case with D9's. Just tried mine the main key spin's in the lock but that after a few turns it works. And the spear key works all the time . "Note to self get a copy of the spear and swap main"
I have tried my sisters 307 key in it and it just spins, what a brilliant design idea, how come Peugeot never advertised this as a security feature? And what is the purpose of the dead lock then

Stops the inside doorhandles from working so you can't put a brick through a 406 window to open the door - you want to nick a 406 you're climbing in through smashed glass (in theory)

Just washed the car and tried the other key. It's a tad better but still nothing brilliant. Key will still spin but not as much and also it takes less tries to get it right?
So...I'm thinking could it be a combination of both the lock and the key?
Whats the best way for a fix - It's been shitting me off no end with all this rainy weather, taking ages to get into the friggin car! Also I look like a twat when I have to throw my keys to the passenger to ask them to unlock it from the passenger side?
Mine's the same (2000D9),seems to alternate between both sides (if you cant lock/unlock one side,so far...note,SO FAR,you can do it from the other). I havn't yet worked out what happens when it spins on BOTH sides !!

There is always one more imbecile than you counted on.
The reason is that ,last October, following heavy rain,I discovered dripping water inside, coming from the
roof light directly below the aerial.I sealed the edges of that abomination externally with sealant, but ever since, there is absolutely no response to key presses on the remote.
