Scanner

Post by xplosiv »

HI,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ELM323-OBD-2-USB- ... dZViewItem

I assume this will work with a 2001 HDi ? thought i might get one as most places ask for between £30 - £60 for just a fault code read out, this will do a lot more if you have the correct software.

But back to the question at hand will it work with my car?

I looked at the ELM based scanners a while ago, especially because you can pull live data whilst driving.

Diesel engined cars didn't have to be EOBD/OBD2 compliant until 2004, so the 406 may or may not be. I e-mailed a few companies at the time and no one could give me a definite answer one way or the other so I didn't bother.

I think you should buy it Andy. Then (if it works) you can tell us all about it and then we can buy it too :P

Funny though :cheesy:

When I finally get round to it I'll get an ELM327 scanner as this will work with all cars after 2004. If it doesn't work with this car then it most likely will with my next car.

I've read on another forum that all HDI's running bosch systems are EOBD compliant. But obviously can't guarantee that as there can be some right bollocks found on forums sometimes.

As i am still looking for a job i am going to put the electronics degree to use and build one myself. The software to use with them is free. I i can get the new ELM 327 Chip that is compatible with all of them.

I've designed a double sided PCB layout for an ELM327 unit. I used Eagle which is a free PCB design package (very good one too) I can e-mail you the layout and schematics if you want. The ELM327 chip can be had for about £23.

Hi,

Thanks but i hate eagle CAD IMO it is rubbish. I have the DWG file for a test board designed by ELM, so i will make that at some point.

FYI i use a free program called dip trace which is also free and 1000 times better than that German rubbish (eagle). Sorry bringing back memories of using it for a project in my degree.

just noticed; you live in cheshire that is not far from me and is where i have been looking for a job.

NOTE: i have orderd a ELM323 for £10 so when it get's here i will let you know if it works ( it is serial and not USB, but that can easily be modded (FTDI)

Hi,

Have a look at Diptrace

i have been playing with PSoC's a brilliant programmable digital and analogue microprocessor
PSoC Info much better than PIC's if you have used them.

foggy is correct no HDi's were EOBD till 2004 so none of those ebay scanners will work
when you refer to ELM and ELM323 are you talking about the diagnostic software ELMSCAN, ive got it and can safely say its the best of the worst, it looks good and is easy to use but is hopeless and completley incompatable with a HDi
the most stupid part about it is the fact you have a fault code logged and you know there is for sure, as you have the K light on, yet it says there are no faults logged, you erase the fault, and as long as its not a permenant fault the light goes out

Hi,

James when we say scanner, we are not talking about the crap hand help scanners. ELM refers to an integrated circuit (IC) that has been made by an IC company; the ELM323 can talk to all standards not just the new 2004 standard. And the ELM327 Chip can do the same as the ELM323 with the added bonus of the ability to talk to CAN Bus (only new cars).

It depends on the software you are using to interpret the information from the car, so a scanner even with an ELM323 IC (chip) in it will not be very good as it will only talk to the EOBD standard.

So I have ordered a ELM323 IC that talks to all the standards and will send the information it receives to the computer/laptop via the serial port, it will work it just depends on the software you are using to interpret the information, worst case I will write my own windows based software as I have done for many other similar projects.

Hi,

Th standard the Peugeot 406 uses is: -

SO 9141-2 protocol ( KWP2000) and a ELM323 USB scan tool should work using ScanMaster-ELM v1.6 software as it can read this standard.
I will let you all know if i get mine working
