ill save it
dont buy a crappy 2,2 HDi
they are simply rubbish the 110 is by far a better investment, they dont pull much better than a 110, they are no where near as economical as the 110, they are known for snapping cambelts and inlet camshafts and timing chain tensioners have a nasty habbit of just breaking with no known reason, there are also NO modified parts for this problem
and then you have the particulate filter problems, they need replacing 60k service, the cleaning fluid needs regular topping up at over £30 a litre
then they are far more prone to sensor failure than the 110
my advice, buy the 110, also insurance on the 2.2 is ridiculous, i theres almost a £900 difference between the two for me, and i can isure a 406 turbo or a GTi6 for less :|

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm so i guess you are saying dont buy one      I have heard lots of bad reports about them. I was even thinking of changing my 110 for a 136 but decided the cheaper option was to get ih chipped instead. Thank god. James with you and your dads knowledge of pugs you could give us a wealth of infomation. Remember knowledge is power. Comparing the two engines what are 110's prone to cause problems with and i will see what still need to spend on mine

the only major weak spots on the 110's are DMF's, throttle pedal sensors, ECU harness plugs, EGR valves, then there are also like any common rail diesel the in-tank pump, the high pressure pump and the injectors, these rarely break unless the car isnt maintained well or its had petrol contamination

So £1250 requiring a bonnet and a front bumper is a good buy then??
Welton wrote:The 136 is a bit more complicated as it has a 16V head (driven from a chain from one cam to the other) and a Variable Vane Turbo (which is fine).

Some say that the 136 is more trouble than the 110 but I say this would be down to poor maintenance of the cambelt/pulleys as the 136 is under more strain.

Performance wise they will pull very strongly and in the future will respond well to a remap to around 160BHP

The main areas are:

The Particulate Filter is prone to throw up numerous faults on the multi function display and is usualy down to the differential pressure sensor failure, this filter requires the maintenance of a fuel additive to clean it out which will put you in the hands of the dealer :|
Bottom Pulley failure (very loud ticking/metallic knocking)
Dual Mass Flywheel/clutch failure (expensive) make sure the clutch feels right with no juddering, slipping, or squeeky/chattery noises sometimes it won't slip until everything is nice and hot after a good run.
Rear engine mount can tear through the rubber isolator (excess engine movement)
Radiator cooling fan/relays can fail
The a/c condensor will almost certainly fail at 7 years old and need replacing (no a/c).
Throttle position sensors can fail
Handbrakes are rubbish and can require a fairly major overhaul to get right.
Fuel lift pump can crap out at about 120000 miles (can send little bits up the fuel lines, not very nice)
The High Pressure pump can fail but we never really see that on here.

Engines and gearboxes are tough, only to be let down slightly by iffy build quality in areas and the odd electrical gremlins (although to be honest the 406 behaves it'self electrically mostly).

Don't be put off at all, but study the service history with care to make sure you get a well cared for car etc.

If you find a decent car, they are cheap enough and you will enjoy it for sure.
