is it a D8?
mine does this, its the cooling fans slowing down
try turning the a/c, then about 30 seconds later switch the engine off, if the noise has gone its the fans
nothing to worry about

HI James,

You were correct with the guess that it was the differential ( the mechanic has replaced a bearing) and it shoud be all fixed. I have also had the driveshaft replaced and front droplink arms as the driveshaft was the source of some bad vibrations over 50mph. If all is ok he is doing the clutch later this week.

xplosive - it's really rare to have this problem, I reckon the drive shaft/suspension leg might have taken a big twatting on something to cause this, I'd get the geometry checked - 4 wheel laser alignment.

Hi,

Either that or the driveshaft was left and the vibration caused the problem to the differential as the previous owner only did 10k in it and before that it has a full company car serive history with over £2,000 spent on it.

It is one of those things with second hand cars, i trust the mechanis will fix it all (as he is very good), my last second hand 406 had problems just not as expensive ( EGR, Vacume pump and pipes, rear springs, water pump). The new car's engine is alot smoother and much faster. So i will slowly get the car up to scratch. When i get a job i will send it to the crash repair man i knon to get all the bodywork done (£150) - all the car park dents and stone chips. then it is of the peugeot for a cambelt change. I also need to get a new comm 2000 unit (found a new one for £80 plus fitting) although mine has not broken completly.

slightly or a noisy diff
The mechanic said it was a bearing in the gearbox/diff (he was busy and did'nt have time to explain) - i will ring him later and find out.

i don't no, as the suspension and ride is much better than my last 406, the mechanic has checked the suspension and found no damage so i have no idea. the car is getting 4 wheel laser aligment soon.

what a pain in the ass

Same here.
Then my 620Ti munched the diff and broke the gearbox :(

Hi,

I don’t think mine is that serious after all this is not a known problem on the 406 ( and the car has done 75K), and is probably the result of hitting a kerb or something at high speed (as welton said before) i will no more when i speak to the mechanic.

Anyway a Rover what were you thinking?

Is this not normal for a rover? – build quality was never something i associated with them, it was probably because your gear box and diff was made out of old coat hanger wire and coke cans left over from lunch all held in place with gaffer tape.

Yeah but rovers are disposible cars these days aren't they. You can pick up a nice spec 75 for about 75p, run it into the ground then get another one

Yup the River turbo was known for having diff bearings made from chocolate (well plastic actually.)
Take them to the redline in first and there goes your diff.

I believe it even said something to that effect in the handbook

Oh and the replacement gearbox from the scrappy with 65k on the clock sounded the same but I sold the car before it threw it's toys out of the pram.

Fancy sending a car out of the Factory that would mash up the diff like that, and also warn you about it in the book

It's no wonder Rover went bust, the Diff was probably the very same unit fitted to a 1.3 Maestro in 1986

I remember my mates MG Metro Turbo (in 1989) that had some plastic parts in the gearbox I think (made a right racket until it was fixed) he too sold it on sharpish.

Used to get a loud metallic whine when idling with no clutch and lots of whining on deceleration.
I revved to about 5k in 1st then changed to 2nd and it was whining loudly in a terminal kind of way.
Got out to see gearbox oil pouring out of the bottom of the car.
Yes I think the casing for the bearings was plastic and prone to break with too much torque (Which the 200BHP turbo has plenty of in first.)
You can get a metal replacement bearing casing - Rover decided to cost cut when making the diff I guess.

A bit like they did when designing the K series head gasket ;)

Are you typing all that in your sleep?

Clearly the writings of a dellusioned misguided soul. There is no way on this earth you could have run that £250.00 1980's sh*t box for 3 years for nothing. Is there?

I saw one the other day with the bodywork in perfect condition. I almost crashed I was so amazed at it! Those things really were right rust buckets.

I haven't seen a Montego in many years tho
