Auto box problem

Post by Dumbclutz »

Hi, I have a 2000 X reg 406 Auto with a petrol 2 Ltr engine.
The Automatic Gearbox has just decided to stop forward motion, whilst retaining the ability to reverse.
There were none of the usual symptoms, slipping, burning smell, juddering, it just decided to stop going forward. I have tried manually selecting each gear and tried all combinations of gear selection and drive mode (Sport / Snow) without any success.
I am pretty sure that the gear selector is actually connected to the gearbox as the "feel" when I move the shifter is normal and the little lights on the display show each gear as I move the shifter, but I suppose this may be due to a sensor on the shifter mechanism inside the car.
There is a little rattle from under the car, I once heard a similar sound on a Ford with a loose bit on the torque converter, and also on a Renault with an exhaust catalyser on the way out.
Well that is all the information I can report, does anyone have an idea about the possible cause of my catastrophe? I live in hope that it is a simple thing like a fuse or possibly a cable but I am steeling myself for worse.
Thanks for taking time to think about this, please let me have any suggestions. :frown:

Hi
it could be the multifunction switch over the gear box
Check this site:
http://www.peugeotlogic.com/workshop/ws ... switch.htm

hope it gets usefull
bye
Changed the filter to K&N, put Bosch plugs and switched to LIQUI MOLI 0W40 oil.
It drives like a charm now

Thanks for the link. I don't think this is my problem though because neither of the mode lights (Sport /Snow) are flashing and the selector reports correctly on the dashboard.
I have tried slowly moving the selector back and forth and can feel the "nudge" when it engages in reverse, but nothing at all when it moves in and out of the forward gears. I've also tried the same selector moving process with each of the mode buttons engaged, without any apparent difference. I'm thinking Jameslxdt may be right and the box has given up the ghost. I'm getting fed up going places in reverse ! What would a recon box cost for a V6, any ideas?
bye

AL4 is no longer exchange from pug  so they cost all of £2,500
i strongly wouldnt recommend an overhauled box from an auto specialist as they just dont last and still cost almost as much as a new one
