Hello chap!

I don't have a Petrol Turbo but I can say this - You can't do much, cheaply, to your engine to get more power.

All you can do to start with is a boost controller/fuel cut defender and increase the fuel pressure and hope and pray you don't blow the intercooler, the head gasket, the radiator, etc etc :|

If you search for 'malachy' on here he has done the most to his engine but most will tell you it's not easy as the engine was not a performance one from stock and many things need beefing up if you want reliability.

Also the stock turbo is not very good and seizes up with bearing failure if too much is asked of it. The turbo gets very hot down the back of the engine and I don't think the water/oil cooling is up to the job (especially if oil changes have been stretched over the years).

(welcome BTW)

My turbo's been exceptionally reliable - over 170,000 miles now with no work done to the engine (other than new plugs). However others on here who have tinkered with theirs to increase the power output have other tales to tell - frequently it seems the turbo will seize if you ask any more of it.

So if you want to press ahead with uprating the car, I'd suggest a new turbo is high on the list...

With my experience of pertol turbo cars, the two priorities are fuelling and cooling. Get either wrong and its trouble time.

If you've got LOTS of moneyto spend, get a nice rollerbearing turbo, renew the cooling system (pump, rad etc) and go for standalone engine management... by which time you're looking at about 2/3 X the cars value so upto you if its really worth it or not.

The stock turbo is good for 1 bar if you remove the cat.... I've had 26 p.s.i out of a stock turbo before lol

It's the cat that causes the main problem with the coking up, need a free flowing system, not a restrictive cat that wouldn't let a fart pass through without slowing it down to a slight breeze first !

Adjust the boost to 12 p.s.i you may need an FCD if you do not use an electronic boost controller.. and that's it to start with, the stock ECU is set for 13 p.s.i so can provide correct fuelling up to that boost pressure.

The stock set up is controlled electronically already, but boost in 1st and 2nd is low 6 p.s.i and 8 p.s.i respectively, this if for traction reasons. But on the higher gears 3rd, 4th, and 5th the pressure is raised from 10 p.s.i to 12 p.s.i max.

You will notice the difference considerably through the first two gears, that should keep you happy for a while...

How much do you have to spend??? :D
