New 406 owner

Post by dashpig »

Hi all, new to the forum, so thought i'd introduce meself

Just bought a '51 plate 406 1.8 Rapier 94k miles, but FSH (hmmm you can tell i don't know THAT much about Pug's already can't you :? ) for running back and forward to work, round trip of about 120 miles

Damm the car's comfortable though, got a CD player, lights and windscreen wipers that come on automatically (i really like that - is that sad ?) blinkin great brakes !! even better than my old Scoob's 4 pots !! wow - and generally i'm really impressed with just about everything about it !

Just moved house, and had to move some stuff in the car - er just exactly how much can you fit in one of these things - they're cavernous inside !

I do have a few questions though which i'm hoping you (incredibly knowledgable lot) can help me with please :D

1. Car is quite hesitant when cold from pulling away - like it's gonna stall - and really slow to pick up though the gears - anything i should be concerned about ?
2. What generally are the major worries about this model?
3. Does anyone know any good garages around Dudley that "know" about Pugs ?
4. Mods - What's best initially to go for - i would like a bit more power, but i'm also conscious of fuel economy - what would be the best things to start off with engine wise please ?
5. I've heard you can get an arm rest for the front seat - worth it ? more trouble than it's worth ?

Anyway enough from me - great to find this well informative site - well done to all the contributers and organisers of it !

I look forward to many more hours browsing through all the forums and getting involved in the site :D

Hiya Neil, welcome 8)

Can't help much with your questions I'm afraid, but there are plenty on here who will be able to.

The 406 is a heavy car for the 1.8 lump to pull around so performance won't be earth shatering, but the one I used to have wasn't disappointingly slow so maybe you should seek another opinion on your question 1.
Only real problems are sometimes dodgy electrics.
The only thing I'd say about mods (and this may start a war) is don't! 120 miles a day, keep it standard and keep it serviced and it'll look after you a long long time. Enjoy the cruisability!
The standard folding armrests are built into the seat, so you'd need to change the seat. But there is an armrest available that fits to the centre console, there was a thread on here somewhere, try doing a search...

Enjoy the forum and make yourelf at home :P

the 1.8 is pretty awful, its really not meant for the 406, they dont feel that fast but if you look at the speedo it does go quite well, its bizzare
just be glad they never sold the 1.6 406 in the uk

If you have a diesel you can get a fuel chip, it does not give power but gives good fuel return i have got one on my rapier, and the front armrest you can get from peugeot dealers try yeomans peugeot and look through the accesories, they cost around £80 & postage, i just bought one on ebay and attaches to the console with two screws gives space to hide mobile phone and a pen and the unit makes driving very comfortable.

Hi Andrew

Cheers for that - have'nt had the time to look around much at the mo for the armrest, but that gives me a direction and indication of likely costs, cheers

Still can;t get over how flippin comfortable it is anyway without the armrest! :D

...and not forgetting the leatherette driving gloves...

Keeping awake, especially first thing (i tend to start of at around 5:45am) is actually something i'm very aware of in this car, given the extremely confortable ride. Mind you anything's comfy compared to my previous car - an Impreza - direct injection of adrenallin every time you got into the thing

All you need is a portable telly...

Asleep at the wheel... I spent 3 days once helping a mate flee his house (another happy customer of the family courts) whilst working nights. Even driving a crappy Corset van with the most uncomfortable seats in the world at 90 couldn't keep me awake and I drempt/hallucinated the tail lights of the car in front were a set of roadworks. It just felt so nice... to... shut... NOOO!!!!! Home, splash water on face, call in sick.
