Hi all, Did I see a question on here a few weeks ago about using veggie oil in diesels ?. I have searched but cant find anything or has it been removed ?.

I have just got into this myself. You cant use SVO in modern high pressure direct injection diesels ie HDI. You have to use biodiesel which is made from vedgtable oil
I have made a few batches and my HDI 90 runs fine on it. Do a search on the internet to find out about it

I got a 2.1 td (`98 130k) and with the increase in fuel again, i was thinking would it be worth sticking "a few litres" in now and again mixed with diesel. ?dizzy wrote:what did you want to know. I dont have much experaince with the Hdi lumps, but all the other ones ive ran for years on SVO.

A mate of mine ran a corset on veggy for a couple of years, he said he had to watch what pump he had 'cos one of the two wouldn't last long. His one was fine though, which is more than could be said about his cam belt...
Not veggy oil but loads of people run their diesels on heating oil here, far cheaper but it hasn't got many additives (foam, waxing etc.) The tranny ran fine on it (hur hur) but I'm told on high pressure diesels it can actually ignite in the fuels lines... I so won't be trying it.

Veggie oil
SVO can be used 100% in older diesels ie not the modern common rail HD as long as it is pre-heated. Some people mix it in with standard diesel up to 50 % but again on the older type of diesels.
You could put some in your HDI - but you run the risk of coking up your injectors and also problems with your pump.
For a modern HDI its best to stick to biodiesel which is produced by splitting the tryglyceride SVO into methyle esters using either sodium methoxide or potassium methoxide and leaving glycerine as a waste product. It has to be washed and tried carefully afterwards to get rid of soapy emulsions and excess catalists.

For veggy oil to work in a 2.1TD - it must have a Bosch pump. The Siemens one apparently dies with veggy oil use

Right basically ive ran SVO for over 10 years now.
HDI's are a big no no. There are many reasons, but ring gumming is terrible in them.
Xud's are fantastic though. As cheap as Waste veggy oil is i dont bother with it. Once its been used without going into detail the characteristics of oil changes and makes it far less desirable to use. Standard SVO on an XUD engine with a Bosch pump means 100% in the summer, dropping to 50/50 in the winter. Any more and it just wont pump through the system in the colder weather.
Some people run The CAV/Lucas pumps with good results however the general consensus is they are not very relaiable. Ive heard of the pump failing 10 mins after converting
Also remember if you do change to change the Fuel filter every week for a month. Basically it pulls all the muck from the bottom of the tank at the beggining, but once thats gone its fine. Happy cheap motoring
