RUST!!! What the f

Post by ed209 »

My near side wing is blistering under the paint, an area the size of a fag packet. I thought these were galvanized?! :!:
The wing/paintwork is sound, it seems to be rustiing from the inside out.
Anyone else got problems with rust?
Are the wings welded or bolted on?

Not seen rust on a car since my ford and vauxhall days! :P

Sounds like accident damage repair to me. Probably had a minor bump and the panel has been replaced with a non-genuine part and not coated with anti-chip or rust proofing on the inside.

Got to agree, I had the same problem with Mrs old car (citroen) body work was and still is (my son now drives the car) free from rust apart from the wing which was replaced by an accident repair garage on the insurance. Cheap,Cheap,Cheap Crap.

yeah, 406s don't really rust (apart from the bloody screws holding the protective plastic underneath crap on...)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

i beg to differ about 406's not rusting.

there is a big design flaw on the front wings where they bolt to the front of the car. there is a nice ledge that holds alot of mud just behind the inner wing and headlight that can not be seen untill everything is removed. The splash guards somehow dont stop the moisture and dirt gathering there and it rots the cars from the inside out on the front wings!

I have seen 2 d8's now with rust in the same part of the wing as mine, so this makes sense.

I have this too!!
It's the only bit of rust on my 11 year old D8! From what I have seen, in the front passenger wheel arch there is a rubber bung, which was missing from mine when I brought the car.... hignsight is a wonderful thing.
The water, salt and dirt being splashed off the wheel up into the arch then into my wing. I have a replacement bung on but it is bubbling from the inside out.
I had a body shop strip and fill it, but he said he couldn't cure it, only delay it, and to be fair, he did a good job but it is starting to bubble up around the filler now

Can anyone suggest a good place to get a new wing? I thought the scrap yard, but I have no idea on how to fit or take the old wing off. Also, how much will I be looking at roughly to get a new wing on and painted?
