Whats your opinions of the 2.0 petrol d9?

Post by ed209 »

I am thinking of replacing my now seriously ill d8 diesel with a 2.0 petrol d9 (x plate). I have little knowledge of these engines, is there anything i should be aware of, common faults gremlins etc. The car is at 61000 miles with full history from a main dealer.

Thanks folks
I call her Starbug 1, because she's green with intergalactic milage!! I do love my D8 diesel.

The engines rarely give trouble, it's the fuel economy that will affect you the most.

As for driving, the 2.0 is a nice torquey unit not a racer and should be quiet and refined.

Not sure if you get the same running/tickover probs as the D8 probs? James will know and his FAQ thread shows all that stuff.

Don't forget the a/c condenser will almost certainly be dead now at 7 years old and is a £200.00 - 300.00 job (if you're lucky someone will have already changed it for a shiney new one). Also check the water rad for condition/leaks.

Is the fuel economy poor? Whats the combine MPG? The book says 34.
Will check the other points when I give her a good going over tomorrow.

Thanks

You should be able to get low 30s if you're kind to it. :cheesy:

Yeah I can squeeze out around 40 on a good run (although mine's the HPi which is supposed to be slightly more economical), but week in week out I'm getting around 31 - 34 and it's quite easy to get it to drop to late 20s if you drive with enthusiasm (or spend a lot of time in town).

HPi is miles more economical due to its setup, the d9 2.0 uses the much more refined EW10 engine, there are 2 variants one with 136 bhp and the other has 138bhp, they are a much better drive than the XU, but dont have a huge torque spike like the XU does, which is the party piece, you get huge acceleration between 3500 and 5500rpm in the XU whereas the EW has much more even power spread from 2000rpm to 6000rpm, so it doesnt feel as fast when in fact its faster, as for economy, as a result of the more even power distribution economy is up a few mpg, but dont expect better than 27mpg round town, the motorway is where it shines, my XU can do 44mpg at 70mph, i havent checked it but the trip indicates 50mpg cruising at 60mph 8) and also its doing 3000rpm at 70 so you are sitting right on the torque, a quick plant of the throttle and woosh :P ive had mine to 135mph :cheesy: , as for the EW im not sure about the motorway driving, but im sure it wouldnt be any worse, they also dont suffer with any of the running problems that the D8 does, the only major issue is the exhaust manifold, a bit of welding can easily fix this though 8)

Looks like a change to VVT gave a very small increase.
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.
