Can you help value a collegues' MR2 Turbo

Post by Welly »

A collegue (at another company) wants to sell her MR2 Turbo T-Bar.

It's a 1996 P reg import 110,000 Kms, it's that Toyota blue/purple colour. Apparently in 1st class condition full documented history etc. (I haven't seen it).

She didn't know what I meant, and giggled somewhat, when I said twin-entry :) (women  ).

She paid £2,000.00 early this year (from a friend) which I thought was very cheap and she might be pleasantly surprised at it's current value!

Any help appreciated.

FINALLY!!! Something I can help on! (well my cousin). He's a big Jap car fanatic so he knows his stuff, also he's imparted alot of wisdom to me over the years.

Anyway, he says he's not heard of Toyota releasing a Turbo MR2 in that year and for your colleague to find out whether it is a turbo (GTS) or just a normal import GTI, the price can change dramatically. Just a few things before any value can be given...

Import MR2 Twin Turbos have raised engine lid vents, if hers is completely flat and smooth, it's a GTI, although you can buy engine lids with raised vents. Also ask her to check the dash, between the rev counter and speedometer there should be another significantly smaller guage, on a GTI it will have a picture of battery.

Here's the value bit, if it's a GTI, she'd be looking at getting around £1000. If it's an import GTS, about £2500. The value of them have dropped loads.

My cousin bought his and spents loads putting on a dump valve, power boost valve (?), turbo timer, induction kit, sideskirts, respray and loads more and couldnt shift it for £3500. :(

Let me know.

Hold your horses there ;)
If this thing is a P-reg Turbo for one thing it may be rarer than rare.
MR2 turbos were only ever sold in Japan and I have never seen one that new over here.
There may be issues with importing a car after a certain year that hasn't got a UK equivalent, which the MR2 turbo doesn't.
I had a K-reg (rev 2) 300BHP turbo before I bought the GTi-6.

I suspect it isn't the turbo at all but the N/A which was still being made in Japland and here till quite late.

Easy ways to tell.
The raised bootlid (Easy to change and lots of people put the turbo ones on because they look better.)
The car may say 16v turbo down the black stripes along the side of the car (stopped on later revisions I think)
There will be a boost gauge in the dashboard.
The acceleration will be close to super car fast and tear your face off

I miss the power in mine, nothing could get near me on the roads - I even made a Volvo T5 and BMW 645 look slow :)
It was a dangerous car in the wet though, very twitchy and with the hybrid turbo running raised boost levels when the turbo boosted you had better be facing in a straight line on dry roads or you were in trouble
But using £20 of petrol (99 ron only) for every 80-90 miles got a little expensive :P
My 300ZX twin turbo was even worse

*Goes off to stroke his awfully slow but fugal HDi*

I have to admit, and I have followed the Jap thing in recent years and I thought it sounded rare as most of the Turbo's I've seen are K/L/M reg's.

Trouble is, with the owner being a Girly, I kept saying "is it really a turbo?" Yes, it's 'really fast' she replied. "Wow" I said. "Have you had any scary moments on wet roundabouts"? No, she said :?

I shall have to do some more digging....I thought if she produced the engine number would help as it should be 3G GTE I think, meaning turbo.

Also shouldn't it say GTS for the turbo and not GTi, or G-Limited.

Yes if it says GTi or G-limited it's a N/A
The GT or GTS are turbos.

Women eh

Fast is not something I would call the N/A
It's no slouch but I have a feeling she would poop herself in a turbo - They are proper man fast :P

It should have a 3SGTE motor if it is the tubo - they were also found in the mighty Sillicar GT4!

As for the value - they bring pretty big moneys here in Australia but we got the Turbo sold here and there are very few imports around!
