Eolys and Morlocks
Hi folks, shoving this on here because it's not Pug as such...
My brother (poor fool) has gawn and bought himself a car that shall remain unnamed ("brand X") with the 2,2 HDI lump. He's just discovered about the FAP/particle filter system and is panicking over how much the stealers will be able to rip him off with it when it stops doing it's thang (it's looking imminent).
Does anyone have any information on a cheaper way of sorting it out? (Ripping the whole lot out and forgetting it would be best...)

i have just refilled the eolys tank on a 807 hdi recently. there quite easy to do. you buy the complete kit from pug or citroen to do the job. fluid is about £30 a litre, but there are two different types. they changed over sometime in 2003, so have your chassis number handy when you order.
the fap filter should be washed out when you refill the eolys tank. we did a 'forced regeneration' which 9 times out of 10 works ok. basically you fill the tank and take the car for a very hard drive for around 50 miles or so. the filter will automatically regenerate itself after 300 odd miles anyhow, its how the system works, but they do need a wash out or a hard run when the tank is refilled.
i dont know if anyone has seen an actual forced regeneration on a pug diagnostic machine of a fap filter, but its mighty good to watch. apparently bumpers of cars 15 foot behind being melted off, setting alight the tarmac etc.

Thanks for the reply, although I'm still a bit iffy about the whole thing. We've been reading horror stories about taking it to the dealers when the filter's full, expecting them to just clean them out. The regeneration sould do the trick but when it doesn't the dealers are saying they need a new filter, rather than deal with the toxic waste that comes out when they take them off to clean them. Apparently they can be reconditioned but they have to send them away to frogland and the dealers are very reluctant to do this too. People are ending up with bills between £5-700 for their troubles. I just found out it costs £275 for a reconditioned filter, the main cost being disposal of the waste.
I also read that topping up the eolys isn't such a good idea either as the tank has no level sensor and the ecu "calculates" how much is left, so even though the tank isn't empty the ecu reckons it is, gives you a warning message and turns the injector off, resulting in a blocked filter. So you end up having to take it to the dealers anyway, if only to have the level reset but quite often resetting the ecu doesn't seem to work either, the only alternative being a new one...
Nobody really seems to have fap really sussed out but I have a feeling that in a few short years it's something all diesel drivers will have to deal with because it looks like all Eurine4 compliant cars will have them. At present the eolys costs £25 a liter, plus the filling kit. As for resetting the ecu, how long is a piece of string? Never mind buying cars for a few hundred quid on ebray, you won't be able to give them away soon.

I was delighted with my extra 15MPG over my old 2.5V6, only to be met with £1,000.00 in repairs in the first 12 months thus wiping out said fuel savings

Diesel cars are getting way, way too complicated. If I had managed to track down a 2,2 (rare as rocking horse sh*t) I'd really be kicking myself now.
Before I bought this one I was thinking about an LPG conversion 'cos it's about half the price of diesel here, which itself is still cheaper than petrol, but I chickened out in the end and "played it safe".
Hopefully, with the amount of diesels being sold with these damn particulate filters, someone will come up with a cheaper way of dealing with it. And hopefully it won't end up with eolys added to the fuel before we buy it...

Actually, I've had a bit of a shock today
I 'arksed' the place where I bought the HDi from (nearly 2 years ago) for a trade-in valuation...........
£800.00
So that's £2,500.00 in depreciation and £1,000.00 in repairs
He did let me know that most places keep £1,000.00 back for prepping, warrenty work etc etc so it should be worth £1,800.00 really but with all the hastle associated with selling privately

Holy bullcrap Batman!!! The dealer will buy your car for 800 squids, spend 20 quid max on a valet, put it on his forecourt for 2,300 and flog it for about 2,000. ive tried to come up with many ways round FAP, but there are none, also the BMW and Volvo particulate filters both cost in excess of £1000, and the volvo one bolts right up to the turbo with no downpipe, so couldnt be fitted to anything else
