Strange beep

Post by Eric »

I had to do a hill start up a 1 in 3 hill on wet leaves and road with a handbrake that doesn't work very well.
All that happened is I stayed stationary with smoke curling up past the passenger window and an alarm beeping on the dashboard.
Yes I was just melting the tyres - I was quietly impressed I had enough torque to do that even on a wet and slippery road 8)

What was the beep?
I wasn't looking at the dashboard at the time just the smoke around the car.

If your car's leaning backwards then all the fluids are running backwards too, probably brake, coolant or even fuel.

ps. I once blew the diff out of a van doing that. :frown:

I managed to get it moving in 2nd in the end till that started wheelspinning then had to go to third :o

Can't be good for the clutch

Could be a fluids beep I guess but they are all full on the level.

*hand shoots up in the air

I know!, I know Eric !.......

You see, if your handbrake was applied whilst the front wheels were turning then you will get the obligatory *beep* HANDBRAKE APPLIED warning. The BSi? uses the signal from the road wheel sensors and because the handbrake was applied (as you were just about to release it) it triggered the warning.

Eric, I know you're into the Jap thing but please refrain from doing this in your 406 Diesel - you'll be giving us a bad name :o

Oh believe me I know a diesel isn't the coolest looking car for burnouts

I think I need new tyres tbh.
The 406 hasn't got the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding let alone spin the tyres

A set of Eagle F1s I think, then I can burn the clutch out faster rather than blowing the diff :P

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Bugger, just looked up decent tyres and they are £55 each

They used to cost £35 for the GTi-6.

Why not try Kung-Po remoulds? I've been running them for years £14.99 per corner - they make driving a bit more, er, 'exciting' :P

Thanks but I've got enough understeer on wet roundabouts

I could drive slower I suppose, but if I went any slower I'd be going backwards :P

Only kidding about the tyres! although I keep wondering about replacing my Michenlins on the front for this winter, might get some NCT5's like the rears.

Strangly enough, yesterday I was thinking about your comment on the HDi being slow when I entered my local test and tune circuit for a high speed run.

Have you ever noticed that you struggle to keep up with cars until about 80MPH and then you quickly whip past them up to 100? because that's exactly what my car does. Once past 80 ish it's a lot better (I suppose this is where the imbalance between BHP and Torque starts to take effect in a positive way, whereas the lack of BHP hinders the initial acceleration of the vehicle's mass).

Yes I can't complain about the car above 80, it pulls very well.
I think it's the gearing.

I see, spinning the wheels with the handbrake applied, that's exacly how I blew the diff out of that van. It wasn't mine of course.

I once had to do a hill start on ice (thanks to the twat in the Mercedes in front stopping for no apparent reason), I ended up having to get it going on the starter motor.

No I would never intentionally spin the wheels with the handbrake on, I started getting the biting point then let the handbrake off.
The handbrake barely works anyway on that hill even with me holding it up under my armpit
As soon as I got the biting point it would start to loose traction.

I have no idea how i got up the hill in the end, I was spinning through first and second, pretty sure a combination of handbrake, and jerking and spluttering at 800rpm then selecting the next gear when the wheels started to spin.

Was worried at one point It'd go sliding back down the hill spinning the wheels the whole way and if it did no way would the handbrake stop it.

Not looking forward to when it snows on that hill

My 306 never had a problem with it, in fact it was nigh on impossible to wheelspin on that hill but it had Eagle F1s all round.

Even my Rover Turbo and 300BHP MR2 Turbo would have to make some effort to spin the wheels on that hill.

Even worse I have to go back down that hill in the wet tonight when it's dark....
Brakes all the way I guess.

Damn shitty brakes and tyres :(
The brakes might stop the car eventually down hill but they lack grip, the pads and discs were new about 8 months ago.

Once I get new calipers on the brakes and new tyres it may be a bit better but I doubt it.

Still it is nice in a straight line or bendy one when it's dry :)
