Well I didn't make it! :cheesy:

Got to 670miles and just turned left at a roundabout about 1/4 mile from my house and it conked out.
No warning just there one second gone the next.

Luckily I was at the bottom of the road for Tescos garage and the misses was at the mother in laws about 2 miles away, so she grabbed a can and filled it up so I could trundle down my road and home :)

I was also lucky because the road narrows past the point where I stopped and I'd have gridlocked a very busy part of Bristol had it gone a few seconds earlier or later
Also luckily I had my winter coat in the back of the car so now have recovered with the aid of a stiff cup of the hot brown

Whats the point?

Running your car low on petrol just sucks up all the crud from the bottom of the tank and just makes the fuel pump work even harder. The amount of money you "think" you are saving by driving an extra 35 miles is lost through you doing damage to both your engine and the fuel pump!

When the fuel light comes on in my car - I have another 10L left in the tank - Around 80-90km left! I get around 630km on average if I include those extra KM.

well after my first tankful in my HDi i got 857 miles 8)
i would never run it too low in a HDi though as the lift pump can easily be damaged as it will suck up the crap in the tank as there is no pre-filter, the HP pump wont be damaged as it has a check valve in it so it will always have some fuel to lubricate it, you may find the K light will come on after running it out as it thinks the rail pressure sensor is broken

Let's play fuel gauge roulette!!

I always wondered how far a fuel tanker could go if it used the diesel in the tank it was lugging...

I was watching a Top Gear repeat earlier, the one where Clarkson took the Audi A8 V8 diesel up to Edinburgh and back... and for some reason I did actually wonder if the car would need a new diesel pump after that stunt...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

If you'd read my initial post I said I had left home that morning and forgotten my wallet so didn't have any payment for fuel, I realised part way through the journey - thought I'd make it there and back but didn't.

I guess I could have walked the 50 miles there and back

Don't be silly, you just need a letter from your bank stating you have funds enough to pay for it.

Oh dear Eric!

At least your missus actually helped you :o

Hey, at least you know how far you can go now 8)

JAMES: Are you sure about that mileage? It's a 15gal tank so you would have average 56 MPG, not impossible but you would have to be doing a very steady journey over a long distance for the whole of the tank IMO. I can't see being able to get 56MPG with some city use, some cold starts etc.

Well all seems well in the land of HDi this morning and it doesn't seem any the worse for wear after it's ordeal
All that I had this morning when I started was flashing oil level bars (checked the oil and it's full.) and lots of gurgling from the rear of the car in the tank.
After a few seconds it all seemed to sort itself out :)

You should be ok fella.

I get those flashing oil bars sometimes, it seems to be when you start the thing in haste  does make you wonder if maybe your sump has emptied itself though

I've been thinking (yes, really) and I wonder how everyone says "ooooh watch out for all that sediment and crap at the bottom of the tank" but really, today, with plastic tanks and seemingly efficient supplies then is there really anything lurking at the darkest depths of the tank???? I suggest that at the bottom of any 406 tank it will be spotless, very spotless.

Yeah I always thought cars had plastic tanks now so gone are the days of dredging sh*t through the pump in theory.

And lets be honest if a car destroyed itself everytime that it ran out of fuel there wouldn't be many cars left on the road :|
