Wing mirror
My car's a 53 reg 406 (02/2004). Having just had my offside resprayed about a fortnight ago after some little sh*t keyed the length of the car, somebody else went and kicked the nearside mirror off on Friday night. I rang my local Peugeot dealership for a quote for a replacement: £153+VAT for an electric mirror and £68+VAT per hour for labour (he reckons one hour is loads of time to do it and I don't know enough to fit it myself).
I've looked on eBay but, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for, i.e. the difference between mk1 and mk2 and when the different makes changed. So, any suggestions on cheaper alternatives?
Is this a good buy: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-406-COMPL ... dZViewItem ? It says 1997-2000. How different is this from a 2003/2004 model?

Re: Wing mirror
And is it difficult to fit such a mirror?

If it helps, this looks like mine: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/406-N-S-ELECTRIC- ... dZViewItem

Re: Wing mirror
Sounds like famous last words but fitting one should only take minutes.
Looking on the Service Box (http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ sign up, it's free) there's all sorts but I'd reckon the safest way would be to take what's left of yours along to a breaker for a comparison. Apparently there is a difference but I can't see it on my two, the shells look identical (apart from the Mickey Mouse one on my D8's driver's door...)

Re: Wing mirror
There're 3 T-20 torx screws holding them on, one under the big cover behind the mirror (prize off gently with something that isn't going to damage the paint) and two more behind little circular plastic covers - one in the door card and one in front of it.

Re: Wing mirror
As Steve says, 3 torx screws, be very careful when you prise off the plastic cover; it has lugs on the back that like to snap!
Also make sure you use a magnetic screwdriver on the screw in the doorcard! (I didn't drop that thankfully)
The mirror will probably be stuck to the door, open the window so you can reach through & give it a nudge; it's the rubber gasket that sticks.
When you've got it off the connector is clipped into the door; be VERY careful not to drop the loom into the door when you disconnect the mirror
otherwise you'll need a wire coathanger and a fishing hat!
I got a pair of mirrors from ebay for £30 when I upgraded to electrics; there are two types; ones with mirror position sensors and ones without.
This does not matter unless you have an Exec with electric seats 'cos the mirror positions are stored with the seat.
If you need any more advice give me a shout; I've done a lot of these, don't pay someone to do it 'cos it really is a piece of p1ss.

I forgot to mention that I moved house last weekend!
Anywho, thanks for the help with this. The Peugeot guy wasn't just as helpful this morning...
Dumb question, but I presume I can just take the backing cover off my current mirror and stick it on the 'new' one (it's not damaged)?

Re: Wing mirror
If you mean the body coloured bit then yes, it just clips on.
Beware though, the D8 and D9 mirrors are slightly different, you can't interchange the covers.

Re: Wing mirror
Ok, here's a really dumb question then: how do I know whether I have a D8 or D9? I presume it's a D9 having been registered in 2004?
Re: Wing mirror
You've got a D9. D8s have a radiator grille like the one in my signature image
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Turn your pop-up blocker off, or set it to a safe zone. Or is that trusted site? Something like that anyway.
