D9 Erratic Speedometer

Post by pumbaah »

hey guys,

was wondering if anyone has encountered the follwoing before: -

speedometer being erratic that it jumps up and down giving inaccurate reading whilst driving initially.
after that it just stop deadat zero without moving, despite that the car was probably moving (approx) at 150km/h or any speed for that matter????

later today, something strange happen, as the car was just started, and idling whilst i put on the belt, the speedometer starting jumping up and down again...the handbrake on sign came on and off on the MFD. all this when the car was stationary...

took it to an authorised Pug service workshop, hooked up to the PPS and everything checked out ok, the speedometer is fine... they even took out the Vehicle Speed Sensor and checked, everything is okay.....afterwhich, the mechanic starting scratching his head and goes...... french electronics.....he was lost....could it be the wiring or .........................

Now i'm driving wihtout the speed being indicated, wonder what the fuzz would say when they stop me for speeding when my speedo is showing zero..........

I had similar on a 206 a few yrs ago, think it was a loose connection between speedo and gearbox.

My 406 has done similar with speedo going down when I was doing over 100mph (on private land), but it felt like all electrics had gone off, as all warning lights came on. For e few secs I had no speedo, lights, power steering or brakes. It turned out to be a faulty Alternator.

faulty alternator, hmmmm.,... could a loose ground somewhere cause something like this?? maybe...

matter of fact, i just changed the battery a day or two before this started happening but the connectors are real tight and nothing is loose there...

C'est possible'

Im not sure if the D9's have the Bitron black box that Johno is referring to, but my D8 had a similar problem a few months back... £40 later at a Pug stealer... SORTED.

There's no control box box in the wiring diagram in Haynes...

unplugged the VSS at the garage and checked its ok there,

the speedometer tested on the diagnostics is okay too.

its in between, looked at the ECU, looks fine to me...anywhere else to check...where else does the signal travel to??

I am having this problem as well at the moment. Although my fuel gague has now started to show what ever it feels like and the temprature gague has started doing an intresting dance to red and back for 10 minutes or so then it works!

My speedo stops working after going above 60mph.

Anyone have any other ideas as I have tried the same as everyone else has upto now!

Thanks

Mike

Unfortunately, this being a D9, is the maximum speed of the car. The speedo is, in fact, working correctly

Just one little change :cheesy:

out of curiosity, how fast has anyone gone on their D9??

Mine's a manual and have done about 220km/h and was entering the red zone, though my speedo is rated for 260km/h max, i need an extra cog to get there...........

220 kph is about 135 mph :!:

In the UK that would be 65mph above our speed limits and, if caught, would result in the loss of the driver's licence

However the ratios in the V6 are interesting to say the least. Power is good from 2K through to redline and 5th gives 25mph/1Krpm.

Based on this a V6 should be capable of doing 155mph (250kph) before it redlines. Of course the power would run out as the drag increases so it would not be possible to actually red-line in 5th.

By the way what model do you have?
