Precisely my thoughts-both my 405's were hassle free for over half a million miles each-the D8 has covered 300,000 & still flys along-what can i replace it with?

Feck feck feck feck, I think the D9's going up for sale with the D8 in the spring and I'll see if I can find a decent D8.

I'm sorry to hear that James :(

It's always this time of year too; I've been working up near Fenchurch street last week & the rad has decided to start pissing out on my trusty cb500 as well as the leak on the 406. Both had radweld in but both now f*cked  I hate London commuting

I am with you James, I hate the way the d9 eats into my wallet every week! The back box fell off last night! So that was another £60 today! Currently in the process of fixing up my old d8 derv with 210k on the clock, and cannot wait to get it back on the road in Jan.
I call her Starbug 1, because she's green with intergalactic milage!! I do love my D8 diesel.

what makes the d9's so bad did they lose a bit of build quality or just got more complicated

I think a bit of both really. It costs more to build a d9 with all the new technology and gadgets etc, so I think that savings have been made elsewhere, and build quality suffers!

I think the d8 feels more solid overall, built like the old 405.

The newer these euroboxes get, the more flimsey they are! When all the good d8's are gone, I won't buy another pug

A bold statement there ED209.

There are many reasons why build quality goes up and down. Structurally there seems to be little wrong with D9s.

The weakness of the D9 and many modern cars is the electronics. Old style ignition circuit was a rotating part with a couple of weights on it to adjust the timing. Modern systems have a TDC sensor, and calculate the time to fire the plugs. There is an antiknock sensor to detect mis-fires and the system can selectively shut off sparks if there is a problem with a cylinder.

There is then the whole change from wired to networked control, complex stuff.

All things considered they are good cars.

*wonders what would happen if an ED209 malfunctioned
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

Best of Blitish James!

It's a logical progression, modern emission standards and performance/economy expectations dictate that basic car functions need tighter controls than is possible with two weights spinning around or relying on fluid dynamics, i.e. more sodding electronics, plus cars have more and more goodies, so a way of cutting down on the number of physical wires becomes necessary. Seeing as computers are everywhere a computer-based system is obvious. The problem is, computers aren't too reliable, and sticking one in something that shakes around a hell of a lot, is subject to shocks and occasionally gets damp isn't going to improve matters much either.

Ah yes, I remember the test flight vid where the computer decided the runway was actually in a forest about a mile from the airport...
