I wish you hadn't have written that. I was about to reply "shockingly mine's fine at the moment" but now I realise it's going to die tonight as a result of me thinking that...mbell666 wrote:YES, considering I am having to have my head rebuilt after a just fan belt failure!nick wrote:Lucky, or what?

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Well, I killed her!
Here's a thought, I notice Haynes says "check the aux belt and renew as necessary" at 12,000 miles for the diesel and 18,000 miles for the petrol but there doesn't appear to be a recommended interval for just changing it. Seeing as how it can cause a major disaster when it goes, maybe we need to specify one ourselves!

Re: Well, I killed her!
My belt had only done 10k! but i had it off to try and fix the sump oil leak i ve got (the thing is still leaking too
).
I pretty certain i got it back on ok, but might have over or under tensioned it or not tightened lower adjuster enough. Last belt did 35K and was fine when i replaced it, just my bad luck i think.
Personally i think changing about every 25k is about right. or twice as often as the cambelt

crankshaft pulley
when mine went i did not know what the hell it was at first. There was metal filings everywhere, then of coarse the pully was broke it was like a screaming banshee! screeching and scraping until i got a solid one without stupid dampers. The cars a little noisey in the morning but still drives ok it knocks a bit on the bottom end. Why cant they build things properly in the first place.
i own a 406 hdi d9 model

Re: Well, I killed her!
D'oh! I was reading Haynes in the bog the other day (like you do) and found there's actually a gauge for telling you when to change the belt.
I'm looking forward to finding it when it warms up enough...

Re: Well, I killed her!
sounds like another french bootom pully gone fit average 2 a week at work it a sh*t design at least it sorted cant believe the garage missed it
if it aint broke thrash it
Re: Well, I killed her!
Reading this with interest. I've only had one go as far as leaving bits of metal all over the engine bay. I've just changed mine in December. Sounded like noisy tappets. Luckily I remembered to look at the pulley with the engine running. If the pulley is sound it will run true. Rev the engine reasonably hard then back it off. If the pulley is shagged you can see it vibrating. Almost feels as if an engine mount is going.
