Newbie

Post by rapierKen »

Hi all, found this site when looking for a fix for my dodgy electrics. I'm on my 5th 406 now!
1st was a green D8 saloon with a 110 hdi on a T. (got written off!) :(
Then a red 1.9td estate on an R that got sold with 330,000 on the clock!
A blue Wreg hdi 90 estate that got sold with 305,000 on the clock.
A silver T reg D9 hdi 90 saloon that failed with a seized diesel pump(ripped the cam belt apart) at 290,000!
Now I've got a red Y reg hdi 90 estate that I bought last year with 43,000 on it. It had been parked up for two years but after a good clean(it was green with mould)it sailed through it's mot.
It does lack power but when you drive 100,000 miles a year it helps to keep the licence clean! :)
Look forward to gaining more knowlege on these workhorses and giving my 2PW.

Thanks for the welcome.
I'm a taxi driver. I also drive a F*rd Tourneo. My private car is a Vx Carlton Gsi (I'm always fighting the rust and mechanical problems but that's for another forum!)
Having driven both D8's and D9's there are advantages to both. But I prefer the hdi engines.
They are cheap to run and I average about 42mpg on a tank which lasts me about 2 days!

Welcome fellow sufferer! :cheesy:

So, is it just the economy, or do you reckon the reliability too?

Ps. how's your cam chain?

The reliability is very good. Gets a full service every 2 months! That includes oil, oil filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and diesel aditive, Plus what ever needs doing. i.e cam belt, fan belt etc. Gets disks about every 2 sets of pads. Just had a big problem with electrics, started with the fuel cap sensor coming on, then "brake fliud low" coupled with "handbrake on" then air bag lights, then speedo and rev counter dropping out, then the brake lights came on with no key in the ignition. I soldered all the connections on the back of the dash, no joy, checked all the fuses, pulled the fuse for the brake lights, no joy. Put my foot on the brake (with the ignition off and the radio came on  ).
After hearing a buzzing noise in the footwell I checked the earth on the "C" pillar. I saw what I thought was a wisp of smoke. I lifted the carpet to find a swimming pool and 4 electric connections steaming away! After emptying the pool and cleaning all the connectors all the idiot lights went out and situation was returned to normal.
"cam chain"-I expect you are referring to the Carlton. The original engine that I have just removed with 76,000 on was rattling but still ok. The Irmsher 4.0l 24v that I am fitting this year has been rebuilt with uprated chains and new head gasket. 8)

And I was thinking "BSI" - phew!

Hey, you jammy goit! Looking forward to destroying a few gearboxes? :P Where'd it come from? The 4.0 seems an extremely rare lump (I can only think of one...) How's the parts supply? Last time I heard one of the blades was nls. (I still have all the bits for the chain swap in a box 'cos I never got round to it :frown: )

I have just spat tea on my monitor

It's good for the site when high milers join as they have good experience, I just wish more of them stick around longer.

Keep looking in fella and ask whatever you want, although by the sounds of it you must know a fair bit about 406's already

It's good to see the HDi fuel pump doing 300,000 miles. Most of us are expecting it to crap out at 130,000 or so. I am still convinced that early HP pump failures are down to a 'petrol' episode at some point.

Have you been through many in-tank lift pumps?

Got the engine from an Irmsher senator. Got a Monza Getrag box to handle the power. Spares are not good but the Autobahnstormers are a good source of spares.

All the Hdi's have required 1 pump each. Don't like it when they go as you just stop and think the cam belt has gone!
My current one now has 97,000 on the clock so I expect it will go in the next 50,000 which will be about 9/10 months time.
The clutch is a little bit heavy but not vibrating yet so that should last a while longer.

Cheers,

What do you do about replacing the lift pump as many say to flush all the lines, remove tank for access to pump etc. bit of a biggish job?

Mines on 117,000 and 9 years so expecting it this year

My mechanic does the lift pump. He's never dropped a tank and as far as I know he doesn't flush the lines through. He puts Forte diesel conditioner in every service. 8)

hmmm, some garages make a right big fuss about metal 'bits' in the fuel, maybe it's not such an issue if you've had a few changed and sailed on afterwards.

I would have thought if any metal "bits" were in the fuel they would only get as far the filter. Generally if the pumps fail, they just stop. Tho I have heard of one that went bang and covered the back seat in diesel

I bet that was interesting to say the least :!:
I hope that there was no-one sitting on said back seat
The answers no!

Now whats the question?
