High pitched whine on acceleration in all gears

Post by 406turboexec »

I love the Peugeot 406 and have just bought my second one, a Rapier Estate. What would cause a high pitched whine on acceleration on all gears? There is no whine with speed, only acceleration. This is the final straw with the 'new' car, after a string of problems beginning with a six car motorway accident in my Peugeot 406 Turbo Executive, which I adored and was written off. I am in despair now. Carol

What sort of engine has it got? My 406 Exec turbo whistles when I accelerate but I think it's just the turbo spooling up :?

Thank you Steve. Ooops, not mechanical, but this is a very loud distinctive screaming whine which gets louder the more you accelerate in all gears. It doesn't do it going down hill for instance. The garage isn't sure but think it is the Turbo. A neighbour says it is the fan belt but the whine is different to that. It has just had a series of repairs, lastly, the head gasket, a depressing story actually but we didn't have the usual A.A. check and its all a bit of a disaster. I collected the car from the garage thinking it had been completely repaired only to discover the whine.

Hi,

Check the Alternator belt, mine did something like this a while ago.

Is it a constant pitch whine or does the pitch vary. If it varies, does it increase with vehicle speed or engine revs?

If you hold it at a constant speed at low revs then floor the accelerator, does the whine come in straight away, or when you feel the turbo kick in?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

This could be the sound of pressurised air escaping fro the intercooler/hoses it's not unknown for the intercooler to leak and cause a whoosing noise. Worth looking at the IC/hoses for oil leaks as the air will blow oil out with it.

Otherwise maybe gearbox/dfferential but these are normaly trouble free here.

Thank you . The whine pitch varies depending on the depression of the accelerator. For instance, going down hill and gathering speed, no whine, up hill and accelerating, the whine increases. Thus, not speed dependent but acceleration affected. When I put my foot down, the whine gets louder and louder, higher and higher. I guess this is caused by the engine revs. (Not a female domain - help)

Well, if I hold it at constant low speed, no whine. If I accelerate, the whine comes in straight away and gets louder the more I put my foot down, to a screaming pitch.

I'm afraid it's really difficult to diagnose a noise without actually seeing the car, although I can't help thinking if it was the turbo bearings it'd be siezed by now. So, this garage changed your head gasket and returned it to you with this noise yet they've failed to identify it, what are they called, John Wayne Auto Services? Well ok it's not impossible that it's coincidence but... Maybe you need to take it someone else, see if you can find one that's "female friendly" too.

Is it the same in all gears? i.e.does it vary with engine speed or road speed ? Is it there just reving the engine in neutral?

Iff I drive the car with low revs in all five gears, the car is silent. After a short while (could be when the Turbo kicks in, I am not sure), the whine starts, high pitched and the more I accelerate, the louder it gets. It is the same in all gears. It varies with acceleration not speed, i.e. going downhill fast, no noise, accelerate uphill and its deafening.
