HDi Poor MPG (33 - 35mpg)

Hello Reader,

I have just filled my tank up and the onboard computer says that it will last me 500miles..... before it used to say about 750miles often 800+miles. My average MPG is down from 42-45 to 33-35 average. No loss in performance that i have noticed. i've taken it for a 'blast' up the motorway to stretch it's legs but this made no differance. all tempratures are normal. The only thing i can say that i've noticed is there is a funny pronounced 'whiineing' noise from what i think is the turbo when i change gear. It lasts about 1-2secs. No smoke out the back tho. there is no dump valve or anything silly like that on it.

It is the HDi 90, with 888889 miles, 2001 D9 Rapier.

any ideas? trying to save for a coupe, and i seem to be spending more and more on fule these days!

I take it that it's ok then?, perhaps i'm noticing it in the pocket as it's gone over £1 per ltr. But i did get an average of 45mpg not long ago.

It sounds a bit like you may have developed a heavier right foot? I'd never expect a "blast" down the motorway to give good economy. A "cruise" or "trundle" maybe, but not "blast".

My HDi 110 only averages 37 in summer and 34 in winter, that's local shortish runs with a fair bit of gusto!

Always get 50/53 on a decent long run though.

If its running ok and pulling as normal, first thing i would do is check trye pressure and then check the brakes are sticking on a bit.

After that your looking at checking fault codes etc

By blast i mean a long 70-80mph to just clear out the 'cobwebs' as i've hurd dervs like that every now and then. Pressures seem ok, I'll have it's brains plugged in sometime.

Don't forget if it's really windy it can have a serious effect on economy. It has been windy recently.

I'd definitely check your brakes as Pugs are known for being bad for binding. It's something that shoudl be checked each service for peace of mind, so they might just need to be stripped down and cleaned.

I've just had to pay £450 to replace virtually my entire braking system due to the previous owner's mechanic not bothering to check them (for about 3 years!!:evil:) I was driving everywhere @ 60 MpH and still only getting 42 MpG. Luckily I found what was left of them while servicing the rest of it.

My 110 averages 47mpg according to the trip computer over the last 4000 miles but if I boot it that comes down to about 33.

Cause I do quite a lot of long runs I thought I would give Jeremy Clarkson a run for his money. (remember that Audi)

Filled it up and stuck to the speed limits with gentle acceleration.

I got to 789 miles with the computer saying I had 67 left in the tank. And that was with about 100 miles of town driving thrown in. Filled it up then cause don't like running it dry. Back to normal now tho, about 700-750.

Around town I reckon 35ish mpg is about right.

My 406 hdi averages 26.7 mpg around town according to the trip computery thing. Its not been near a motorway in months.

I dont think its well as a full tank gets me around 400 miles

If it helps, my HDi spends most of the time driving from one end of town to the other and it's getting a gnat's cock over 40mpg.

Ive just done a 400 mile round trip run and the car reports an averag empg of 44.6mpg and it was 80 mph all the way
