Iff I drive the car with low revs in all five gears, the car is silent. After a short while (could be when the Turbo kicks in, I am not sure), the whine starts, high pitched and the more I accelerate, the louder it gets. It is the same in all gears. It varies with acceleration not speed, i.e. going downhill fast, no noise, accelerate uphill and its deafening.

Very hard to diagnose without hearing it, but if it's from the turbo system it should make the noise with short jabs of throttle even when not moving as the turbo is driven by exhaust gasses & not directly related to the car moving.
If its not possible to get the sound without the car in gear it may be a gearbox bearing or similar.

It sounds like it produces that noise under load.... I would get all my belts checked. Maybe a bottom pulley?

i agree with cpt maybe a bottom pulley or the garage tightened the alternator belt too
much and its making one of the pulleys scream ... get someone to take the belt off and briefly
run the car to see if it has stopped will eliminate one possibility ...
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

Hi I have exactly the same problem with the whining only noticed it this week and went a long journey today and very noticible when you accelerated and in every gear, was fine when sitting at constant speed. Only just had a new diesel fuel filter and a new fap fitted so not been out much in the car
Is this a serious problem, any ideas before I take car to have it looked at..
Cheers

Apart from everything mentioned above, especially "Very hard to diagnose without hearing it", it might be that, now your exhaust's clearer with the new fap, you're hearing your turbo much louder.

Would it maybe be as simple as a turbo pipe not connectecd properly, tightened correctly, or has a slight hole in causeing a 'whine/whisle' with engine strain as the turbo would spool up to full pressure when pushing uphill?
I had a blocked turbo inlet on my tubby exec turbo, and to get it home the good old AA man took the turbo pipe off the top of the engine to limp me home and I got all sorts of whine/whistling noises from the turbo as to spooled up with no resistance to the engine.
Just a thought.

When you say dead, do you mean the engine's not even turning over on the starter?

I guessed :cheesy:

I'm thinking the chap from the garage knew what he was doing, so no duff battery or dodgy connections, that kind of rules out the alternator too. Afaik the immobiliser faults don't stop the engine cranking, I know they do on D8s so I presume D9s too. Unless your panel lights are dimming when you try to start it, and together with the whining noise, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say starter motor.

Good luck tomorrow anyway.

YOu say you have had the head gasket done recently... well, it could be that the timing belt has been over tensioned on an old pretensioner, or the water pump if this hasn't been changed... it could even be the Auxillary belt pre tensioner worn.

It's something that is a result from acceleration.... although a blocked air feed to the turbo could be cause for it also.

I would take it back to the garage that did the head gasket and ask WTF?

Also if there is only clicking when you try and crank it over then it could be the a flat battery, which would be the result of a knackered alternator, the whining could have been produced by collapsed bearings / bushes in the alternator itself and now... it is siezed / dead the battery has been the only thing running the car! ? !? !

Hi Ive not had the head gasket done, I got a new fap filter and some pipe fitted, when picked up car from garage they had damaged the fuel filter housing and it was leaking so got a new one fitted along with some front brake pads. just over a week ago I heard a noise when accelerating would kick in about 2300 revs, was reading thread here to have some ideas, I wouldnt go back to our local peugeot dealers as they are rubbish and Im in a dispute with them over the fuel filter housing. I had booked car into another local garage and explained the noise as they were busy the car was booked for thurs.
When I drove yesterday from work to the high st was about a mile the car was fine until I went to start it, When the garage came to pick up my car I had a pice of paper with can you check the alternator, the bottom pulley and the air inlet pipes to the turbo, I hope to find out today I already have a £500 bill for the fap, they charge £80 to reset your codes,
The down side of staying in a small town there is no competition my next nearest pug garage is a 300 mile round trip to Glasgow.
I am just so frustrated with this, and am dreading what the garage says, I will keep you posted, I do appreciate the help as the guys in the garage know I have done my homework and are less likely to try and rip me off
New timing belt was fitted in Sept.
Thought the car would have went with a jump start but no luck.
I did really like the car to drive and felt safe in it, Thinking now I should have kept the old Vectra that went on fire with no damage LOL
