Actually the scaff boards worked pretty well, I made sure I got the axle stands underneath pretty sharpish though!

When I was 18 I had to do the clutch cable on my old diesel fiat uno. I supported it with the poxy little scissor jack that came with the car, my Dad caught me and gave me the bollocking of my life! The thought of it now though

OOoooo, I won't work under a car unless it's on axle stands at least. I may be persuaded to change brake pads etc with the car on a jack, as long as I don't need to go underneath, and if it's just on the jack as soon as a wheel is off I lay it under the sill, so that if the car falls off the jack then it won't fall very far.

Agreed! Oh the wisdom of years and very lucky escapes!

I worked with a fella who's car fell on him and mashed his cheek and eye socket.

Many hours of surgery, eye ball out, eye ball in, and he still looked like frankenstein 25 years later :|

True story.

To be honest, these days I'm happy to pay for the garage to do stuff. And I only have limited kit so figure by the time I've bought tools etc....... :|

My sisters boyfriend got crushed to death working under a car with just a jack supporting it, it was a few hours later before he was discovered. Even if I have the car up on ramps I still find somewhere else for a set of axel stands, by the jacking point etc..................... I think if you have them then may as well use em.

Mate, that's terrible. I know a guy here who was with his dad shfting a load of wood on a trailer, the trailer got a flat so they jacked it up the best they could but the load moved and my mate saw his dad get crushed.

I'm always a bit panicky when jacking my 6s because nowhere underneath really says "jack me up here" to me, Haynes says use the sills but I had a trolley jack slip off a sill once so I'm not keen.

Totally agree Steve. When I was doing the front drop links and anti roll bushes it took ages to find a point that the car was stable on axle stands.
Haynes suggesting under the suspension subframe; I tried that and the bloody car started twisting off the stands  I near sh1t myself.
